I pwned costume shopping yesterday. I pwned so hard. I went to the Northgate Mall because I wanted to check out Ross and Target and go to Barnes and Noble to bug Liz and get more Discworld. I needed a white blouse of some kind and a red top suitable for a Sexy Mountie costume as well as a red bra, black thigh high stockings and white knee socks. And an iron.
Ross was a loss (I'm so clever). I found a lingerie top that would have worked, it fit me really well, but it was just a tad too slutty. Being, you know, lingerie and all. Then at Target I found a red serge dress thing that would have been an adorable (but shade too conservative) Mountie dress. It wasn't actually serge, but it would have passed. But they didn't have it in my size. I was really sad at first, so I bought my iron and headed to the mall feeling rather down. Then I went to Lane Bryant and used my gift card from last Christmas to buy a nice red bra and a white one too since I didn't have a good white bra.
Then I decided to go to Jujubes on the off chance that they'd have something that would work, because Jujubes is awesome and I like looking at the weird retro stuff in there no matter what I'm actually shopping for. But they were gone. Paved over for a Sketchers store apparently, which I am sad about to the extent that I am capable of being sad just now. I walked the length of the mall just in case the store had moved and did a quick circuit of JCPenny's homing in on anything red, but that was fruitless.
I was very tired by this point and feeling just a little discouraged, still upset that they didn't have the right size at Target. Then I passed The Element and there was a bright red thing on display. The fact that it's 'close' to Christmas worked disconcertingly well in my favor cause there was a ton of red stuff in every store I went to. The bright red thing was $50 and not quite right anyway and most of the stuff in that store doesn't fit me so I was gonna leave but I decided to rummage through their ultra cheap clearance boxes.
I found the perfect top. It's exactly right. It's nice, and red, and fitted, and suitably formal looking and, and, and.... It's just perfect. And it was ten bucks on uber super clearance. I also found a white top in there for $7 that'll work for my D.E.B.S costume.
After that triumph I went to Macy's in search of socks and stockings. Target didn't have any white knee socks, which I thought was weird. I go the knee socks at Macy's but they didn't have any black stockings that weren't sheer. My original (stolen from Erica) idea was to take some yellow puff paint to some black stockings to emulate the less sexy regulation puff pants. But it occurred to me that I could use a pair of black fishnets that I already have and thread yellow ribbon up the sides. I think this will be a superior solution.
When I went shopping with Erica on Tuesday I acquired an excellent second hand brown Stetson that will make an excellent Mountie hat with some judicious ironing as well as some belts to fashion into a John Brown. I also got some blue plaid to make into a D.E.B.S uniform skirt and tie.
So now I have two costumes (well one and a half since I still need to make the skirt) and no place to go. But I am gonna look damn cute.
