Cabbages and Kings

So I went home for a visit this weekend. My mom had a bunch of stuff to give me from her trip to Japan. Most of it was goofy adorable souveniers, but she also got me a really nice digital camera. I have only played with it a little, but it is super cool and it talks a lot. I am very excited. I also visited my grandparents and their growing collection of wildcats. They live out in the country (or what was the country a couple decades ago, edge of own anyway) and there are lots of feral cats. They've been taking in kittens lately. They currently have five plus the dog, and are working on taming more. Oiy.

Also, funny story about my brother! So, his best friend's mom is a nice person in most respects except that she is really racist against Mexicans. She'll go on and on about how they're all illegal and on welfare and stealing our jobs and none of them speak English.... My mom says she just wants to slap her sometimes. Anyway apparently Linda was at the baptism of her new grandson at the Lutherin Church, and one of the first things she was pick up a hymnal. This hymnal just happened to be in Spanish. So she flies off the handle and starts ranting about how her family was one of the founding families of this church, but she'll never come back again if it's being taken over by Mexicans. She also claims that they're changing all the hymns to have a Mariachi sort of rythym and it's disgraceful. Her son was disgusted with her. Apparently my mom and Gus were discussing this latest outburst and my little brother said that next time she goes off mom should say, "Gee Linda, what happened? You miss arts and crafts at your Clan meeting?" I nearly died. Of course I think it's probably funnier if you know Linda, cause she does lots of artsy craftsy sorta stuff. The point is, my little brother is a wit.

I also went through stuff and brought a bunch of junk back up here. I found a bunch of old artwork from high school and freshman year at UPS and it made me feel better because I liked a lot of it. It was good. I am feeling more confident after that one painting had to be destroyed. I was a tad dismayed that I could not find my kites even with Mark helping me search. I don't really care about the cheap cheesy stunt kite I have, but I want my clown kite. It's a white half circle with a blue and red clown face stitch on it with a 12 foot rainbow striped tail. I've had it since I was a baby. I'm pretty sure that Mom wouldn't have gotten rid of that though. Since we couldn't find them, Mark gave me a giant pirate ship kite that he bought for Gus that they dont' fly very often. It's pretty sweet.

I also found my marionettes. I have a marionette collection. I've been obsessed with puppetry since I was in first or second grade. Long before I encountered the non Sesame Street works of Jim Henson certainly. Anyway I brought the best two, Babbett, a two legged dog like creature, and Joe the Camel (who does not endorse the use of tobacco products) that I got at the Las Vegas Airport. I think Babett is cute but apparently Liz thinks that she is frightening. It's kind of hilarious.

My little brother finally succeeded in forcing me to watch Borat last night. It was much less offensive than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, it was still pretty offensive. Parts of it were pretty damn funny though. I also borrowed seasons 1 and 5 of Smallville from Gus so I could catch some episodes that I'd missed. I watched some of it tonight. God that show is bad. It's interesting though, because it's still somehow appealing despite the fact that we the audience hate most of the characters that we're supposed to like, and like the ones we're supposed to hate, none of the characters are written with any consistancy, they all whine all teh time, they bastardize DC canon in a weird and confusing way, and the acting is all relentlessly terrible. If you watch an entire season at a time (rather than episode by episode) the plot arch will make sense and can be compelling even. It's like the overall story is being guided by one competant writer who lets the other crazy monkeys with typewriters fill in each individual episode. All the monkeys are unreasoningly in love with Lana Lang. It kinda makes me sad, because Lana in teh comics was a character you could get behind. She was sweet and likable and stuff. Oh well. The important thing is that my awesome Smallville kidfic is coming along.

Now time for bed.
