You may remember my post from back in September when my husband and I adopted a nine month old handful of a pit bull. She barked obsessively at our cats and bit them if they got close enough, she bit us when we tried to put her leash on, she bit us if we told her to get off the couch, she ate everything she could get her paws on...she was a handful ( Read more... )

When we first brought cats into our house with our very rambunctious pittie, Ozzie, we kept him leashed to me or another adult when they weren't confined to separate areas of the house (such as his crate). This took four months of non-stop work and we also ended up with a hole in the screen from when outside dog wanted to get at inside kitten.

With copious amounts of treats for good behaviour (focusing on us/ignoring the cat), we eventually got Ozzie to pretty much ignore the cat. When we brought a second cat into the house, he dropped immediately into a "sit" and looked to us for a reward (while the freaked-out young cat skittered away for cover).

With the hard biting for play in general, though, it sounds as if you would really benefit from a behavioralist to work with you on extinguishing that behaviour. Even a really big, play-ready dog can take offense to a strong bite in play so better to get your pup to let up. Good luck!

I probably should have mentioned this in my post, but when she's calm, she has no problem being calm around the cats.
