Pet food recall news, 30 April: And it gets worse and worse

Apr 30, 2007 05:09

Major news update for the pet food recall ticker and the original post:

a) An International Herald-Tribune article gives a stunning and shocking expose of melamine doping--and it confirms several of our worst fears:

1) Melamine doping is extremely widespread in China and in fact is routine with practically all grain products (including wheat, soy, rice, etc.) grown in or sold in the country. (In fact it is so common that melamine-producing regions of China make a very large profit from the business of melamine doping.)

2) Melamine-doped grain, including grain products sold for the human and pet feed markets, has apparently been in the market for years and may well have been responsible for both human and pet illnesses during this time. (I have to state this for the record--if, in fact, it was melamine-doped pet food rather than metabolic illness that caused my babycat Dementia to die two years ago, someone is going to fucking suffer.)

3) Grain and gluten products not yet recalled (notably, soy and soy proteins) are likely affected (so it may be not just the GMO that's giving soy-sensitive folks problems but the fucking melamine in the stuff, too).

b) This last bit is more of an administrative note--the next news ticker update will be rolled into a new dedicated post due to hitting LJ size limits (again). I will keep a pointer to the old news ticker for historical purposes.
