Food recall update, 29 April: All hell is about to break loose
A fairly major update for the news ticker:
Again, if you are not doing so, I am imploring the readers of this list to consider not purchasing pork products (including not only pork, sausage and bacon but also other products from pigs including scrapple, lard, etc.) unless you know the supplier and know they are not using salvaged pet feed as an ingredient in their slop.
The reason being is that it's been previously reported that upwards of nine states have pigs (and chickens in Missouri) that have been fed contaminated slop, and the USDA is ordering the destruction of over 6000 pigs (and that's just the ones they know about--many have quite possibly already entered the food chain and were missed, as it's now known that contaminated product has been shipped to the US since at least July 2006).
The reason I'm reiterating this, and noting that forty kinds of hell are about to break loose, is because we now have frightening confirmation that humans have eaten some of the contaminated pork--45 people in California alone (that they've been able to track so far) have apparently eaten pork from pigs fed contaminated slop.

The FDA is also examining imported vegetable proteins earmarked for human products like pizza, protein bars and baby formula. That investigation, still in its early stages, hasn't uncovered any contaminated ingredients, but the agency, an FDA doctor said, wanted to "get ahead of the curve."

The office is also involved in recall effectiveness. "It's very taxing on our resources," said Scott MacIntire, director of the FDA's Chicago office, which oversees state operations.
MacIntire said his office is investigating a shipment of rice protein concentrate imported to Illinois and potentially used in a human product.
So we are likely in not only for an expansion of pet food recalls, but the beginnings of human food recalls as well. :P There are already cries to scrap the FDA entirely and rebuild the organisation from the ground up...if you thought FEMA's fuckups with Hurricane Katrina caused people to raise cain, you're about to see that that mess was a minor summer storm compared to the EF-5 Shitstorm that is going to erupt over this. (Already there has been a lot of people pointing out how Shrub has gutted the FDA (along with most other federal agencies) in favour of putting dominionist loyalists in office; this may well be the straw that breaks the camel's back in regards to the viability of the Republican Party, folks. (Even dominionist "God Warriors" gotta eat, you know.) People do NOT react well with the safety of their kids being threatened, and seeing as the FDA is particularly worried that this could've gotten into baby formula and baby food...you do the math.)
