I'm not a fan of standing up while typing, but this will have to do for now, because I am too fucking lazy to roll up an exercise ball and jury-rig a make-shift desk.
I am feeling more and more of an impulse to get active again, work out, get some damn exercise. The issue of course, is that it is far easier to say such things than actually follow through with them. Here's my criteria/thoughts about working out:
Part One: Physical exertion is your friend, Darren.
1. It can't be boring.
I have zero desire to walk/jog/bike on over-sized hamster wheel contraptions. I need to feel like I'm actually doing something and not just following a monotonous cycle that some machine has programmed into it. Thusly, I am considering my primary work out regimen to include a fair amount of sports.
2. If I am to engage in sports as a vehicle to attain better flexibility and cardio fitness (my primary goals), what sport to choose?
I have experience in tennis and basketball, but both of those require other people (unless you are just doing returns against a machine or shooting hoops solo) in order to get any real enjoyment or benefit from them.
3. I used to study kung fu, and would not mind returning to the martial arts.
My stipulation with this is that the martial art be "for real" and not some dumb kickboxing aerobics class or dippy, made-for-the-suburbs tai chi. Tai chi-quan, yes. Muy Thai, yes. None of the rec-center bullshit, please.
4. I need some strength training too.
I'm thinking free weights, but I know nothing about this. Suggestions, please.
5. I need a buddy.
I'd like to say that I have the wherewithal to follow this plan solo, but let's face it, it's a hell of a lot easier to maintain a routine when someone else is doing it with you. Consider this a call, dear readers. Help a white boy out.
Part 2: In which Darren talks about guns.
As much as working out is a physical pursuit, there is also a mental element that I'd need to pursue. Lately, I've taken to shooting. I bought a 9mm Sig 226 and it is teh sex. I am horribly rusty, though, and would love to have a "shooting buddy" join me and help me re-acquire my shooting skill set. I don't think I'd ever want to get a carry permit, but taking a class or working with someone one-on-one would probably be a benefit. If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years, it's that gamer nerd egoism is not something to celebrate: we are not Einsteins/Chitwoods/Kierkegaards/Ninjas- everyone needs instruction.
ANYWAY.
Just some thoughts as I contemplate the waning hours of the afternoon. Hit me back, peeps.
