FIVE times you lost your nerve and one time you were confident.

- 1 -

"It's awful warm today isn't it?" she asks, bangle-bracelets knocking together as she makes a hairpin turn. 'I'm awful gay today' doesn't sound like an Oscar-winning response.

"Sure is."

- 2 -

"Can you do the laundry for me today, I've got a lot on my plate and I know you can work a vacuum--"

"Can I talk to you for a sec?" he cuts her off, worrying his lower lip between his teeth.

"Of course." His dad chooses then to pop in, pouring some orange juice as he leans over for a chaste kiss of unspeakable marital-bliss.

Chad flees to the laundry room.

- 3 -

"That Evans boy is over here a lot. I thought you two weren't very close?" his mom inquires, soft and sweet as always, but Chad sees through her disguise.

She knows. It runs through his head on rampant, coal-hot feet. She knows, she must.

"I'm glad. You know I adore Troy, but Ryan's just so sweet." Her bright smile has Chad's gut twisting into knots. "Chad? Are you alright? You look pale."

He fakes a cough and runs upstairs at the next available opportunity.

His dad regards him blankly from over the finance column. He wonders frantically if Dad knows too. Surely, if they both did, they'd approach him? They'd say something or even get mad...

Maybe they didn't know what to say. Maybe they were as lost as he was.

Maybe they had no idea.

- 5 -

"Mom, I--"

"You've been trying to spit something out all week, dear. What is it?" It's a tender question as she wipes her hands on her apron.

"This isn't 1952, Mom. I think they want their apron back." Oh god, he really has been spending too much time with Ryan.

His mom snorts out a laugh, regarding Chad with a headtilt he knows is assessing how serious he is. "Is that all?"

"That's.. all." That's all she wrote, he thinks blandly, seeking refuge for what seems the billionth time. Funny how he always ends up texting Ryan during the escape.

- & once -

"You're going to worry yourself purple in the face, Chad. I know you have something to say." She stands in the doorway, bodily blocking his escape-route. Damn crafty moms.

"I'm gay." His voice is cracking, his face aflame, and he has to stare at his shoes to keep conscious, but he can't quell the tiny thrill of victory in his stomach.

"I know."

And they hug. And it isn't the end of the world.
