Edited to Add: Because all of my own personal canon is a result of things I've discovered while writing, and because some of the comments indicate maybe I should, I've gone in and added links to the stories where I either established or dealt with this aspect of MOPC ... just for anyone who's interested.
1. Okay, I'm sure this will just shock the shit out of everyone, but John and Jim Murphy served in the Marines together, before Jim became a pastor. The Constancy of Pain, The Sign, Jitters
2. John's parents died when he was very young -- 5, to be exact -- along with his little brother. In a house fire. It isn't a coincidence. In the Beginning, As it Ends
3. John met Mary on the boardwalk by the beach. He got his first date with her by putting his head between hers and a volley ball coming at her face hard enough to knock him on his ass when it hit him instead. She was wearing a pink bikini at the time. She agreed to buy him a cup of coffee to say thank you, but he insisted on paying. As soon as she gave in and let him pay for the coffee, he told her she really hadn't actually bought him that cup of coffee she promised, but that was okay if she was that type. He leveraged that into 3 cups of coffee and breakfast the next morning. And everything in between ... In the Beginning, As it Ends, Living Inside the Box
4. Jim Murphy has never hit on a woman in his life who didn't end up smelling like him at the end of the night. After being wounded overseas and sent home to recover, he went AWOL on a mission of self destruction. John saved him. Jitters and my upcoming Jim story
5. John doesn't disbelieve in God, he's turned his back on God in anger. Pray with Me, The Constancy of Pain, Living Inside the Box
6. Dean believes in God ... but not as much as he believes in his dad. And mostly because he figures Pastor Jim is way too smart to be that wrong about something he believes that hard. But Dean is never going to admit as much to Sammy. Because a far as he's concerned? God really deserves a serious ass kicking for everything He's put the Winchester family through. 13. For every teacher Sam has had who thought he was da bomb because he was so smart, Dean has had one who wouldn't admit they thought he was the greatest kid ever even though he was a total pain in the ass. My Hero, by Dean Winchester and one I'm writing now.
14. Dean's greatest fear is that he will fail John. John's greatest fear is that he's already failed his sons. Slaying Dragons, Reverent, Clean, Thrify and Wise, Living Inside the Box, Open Your Eyes, To Everything a Season (WIP)
15. John's falling out with Daniel Elkins was over Elkins telling him he had to cut his ties with the boys if he wanted to keep working with him. Elkins viewed family as unacceptable risks to the mission of hunting because they could be used against a hunter. He left his wife and child not to protect them from what he hunted, but to protect himself and his holy mission from being mitigated by evil using his family to get to him. He demanded John do the same if they were going to work together. He told John he didn't have the colt that could kill the YED, but he did know where it was, and if John hunted with him long enough to wipe vampires to extinction, he'd make sure John got the colt in return. John told him to go piss up a rope. He never considered doing anything else, and he never regreted the choice he made. We Were Like Family Once
16. John would have traded the colt and himself to save Sam, too. Don't Ask, Don't Tell, The Unspoken, and uh ... pretty much everything else I've ever written. :D
17. John has never slept with another woman since the day he met Mary. The Difference Between Night and Dark, Living Inside the Box
18. Ellen knows John killed Bill to protect her and Jo, and she knows everything John has told her about what happened is a lie. She's known that since the beginning, but she believed his lies because she needed them. She doesn't believe them any more, but she was still willing to use them to try and keep Jo from following a hunter's life. And she knows John wouldn't hold that against her. 19. John's knuckles were so bruised the day he married Mary that the Reverend who performed the ceremony asked him what happened to them. John lied. Jim Murphy almost choked to death laughing. Jitters
20. The hardest thing John has ever done was leave Mary to die alone. If he'd loved her any less, he would have stayed and died with her instead of surviving to protect their sons from the coming storm. To Everything a Season (WIP) and pretty much everything I've ever written.
