So it wasn't wasted or unnecessary time by any stretch of the imagination, I was just getting a little frustrated with the damn thing growning on me like a weed every time I turned my back on it.
But as it turned out, there was a third, FAR more important subtext going on there, too, that wasn't in the first version at all, and that is a continuation of a subtext that has already been running under the action and will continue to do so ... the changing relationship between John and Dean from a more authoritarian dynamic to a more equal partnership, and a clarification of how much John is starting to depend on Dean emotionally as well as logistically ... and how much relief that kind of support is giving John, how much it is helping him cope with things that had started to become to wearing they were overwhelming his ability to go on.
So while that subtext exists in other locations, there are aspects of it that hadn't found voice yet that very much find voice here now. Which actually changes this scene from one that was originally designed just to set up the next scene to one with a purpose of it's own.
