Fic: The Leaf And The Wind - Firefly, PG-13, Jayne, Wash/Zoe, Angst, Drabble, Romance

Sep 30, 2011 00:06

The masses have spoken - Firefly fic it is! (Dean and his BFF came so close though). According to my author notes, I hadn't written fic in a year and a half when I wrote this. Guess Firefly kickstarted my muses. That also means this is my first Firefly fanfic I ever wrote. You will not be shocked to discover that all three of my Firefly fics are Jayne POVs. Is anyone surprised by this? Anyone? No? Thought not. The title is unoriginal, but whatever, it aptly describes them.

This one was written in 2005/2006 (I am not even sure at this point) for the lovely liptonrm, who was in denial about thethingthatneverhappened and beta'd by the awesome oselle. Jayne's observations on Wash & Zoe's relationship. PG-13. A little minor angst for Jayne, obvious romance for Wash/Zoe. 414 words.

Beta’d: All the stars the night sky can show me to oselle for the beta.
Author's Notes: This is the first fan-fiction I have written in a year and a half. Firefly has awoken the Beast within and then eaten my soul. The title isn't very original but is there a better way to describe the most perfect marriage in the whole of every fandom everywhere? Thought not.
Dedication: This is for liptonrm, because she has cried every night since seeing the movie of Serenity. May Their Love Live On Forever.

It wasn't like Jayne was envious or anything. He wasn't looking for a significant other. He didn't have time to deal with relationship issues, let alone get settled and make babies.

Though Wash and Zoe weren't exactly settled and they sure as hell weren't making any gorram babies.

Still, Jayne liked his brothels and his street corners. He liked the alleyways behind bars and the cellars that were dug into the earth. Jayne liked to do his business and be on his way. He didn't like the thought of having one person day in and day out, never being able to escape to the quiet empty of Serenity. His bunk was his bunk and nobody else's.

That's the way it was and that's the way Jayne liked it.

Except sometimes he found himself watching them. Watching the way Zoe perched on the console, her leg just brushing against Wash. Watching the way Wash automatically reached for his wife's hand, ran his thumb along the back of it in a reassuring way. Watching the way Zoe would come up behind him, wrap her arms around his neck in a possessive manner.

Jayne liked listening to them too. Wash would whisper to Zoe and she would smile, oblivious to the room full of people around them. Jayne liked the way Zoe referred to Wash as "my man" with a broad unashamed grin.

Jayne even liked the way they argued. Wash using a sterner tone when he was most worried about Zoe going on a mission. Zoe punctuating her words as she walked a tight line between loyalty to her Captain and her husband.

But Jayne especially liked the noises they made at night, as he lay in his bunk and listened through Serenity's thin walls. Zoe's gasps and moans beginning the second the two hit the bed, the only noise Wash making coming right before the end when Zoe's moans turn into little hiccups and Wash growls into her skin. Then Zoe releasing a sigh and Wash murmuring words into her ear, encouraging her to stay awake a few more minutes.

And then the silence that feeds Jayne's imagination. He could see Zoe asleep on her back, Wash leaning over to look at her, caressing her hair, watching the corners of her mouth turn upwards even as she slept.

But Jayne liked his brothels and street corners. He liked the quiet empty of Serenity and his bunk.

And it wasn't like he was envious or anything.
