Fic: Galentine’s - No Name For This - G, Goldberry, Drabble, Friendship, Gen

Mar 28, 2016 17:01

The last of the Galentine's stories! For shirebound’s prompt of ‘Does Goldberry have female friends? She is the River Daughter... what other beings like her roam Middle-earth?’. I was so stumped by this prompt, and I said to my sister, “Like what the heck, I mean, Goldberry’s friends are the fricking trees!” and threw my hands up and my sister paused for a moment and then said, “That’s it though. That’s what you should write about.” shirebound, I am so, so glad we have gotten this chance to know each other, after all the years of hearing about you from my sister. You are amazingly wonderful and I am so glad to call you ‘friend’. (also, as it turns out, happy birthday too!) 347 words. Enjoy!

Author's Notes: This is part of the Galentine’s verse, for shirebound’s prompt of ‘Does Goldberry have female friends? She is the River Daughter... what other beings like her roam Middle-earth?’. This one is a bit different in style than the others, but still celebrates female friendship. I was so stumped by this prompt and I said to my sister, “Like what the heck, I mean, Goldberry’s friends are the fricking trees!” and threw my hands up in exasperation and my sister paused for a moment and then said, “That’s it though. That’s what you should write about.” And so I did.
Dedication: For shirebound. I am so, so glad we have gotten this chance to know each other, after all the years of hearing about you from my sister. You are amazingly wonderful and I am so glad to call you ‘friend’. Happy Galentine’s Day!

Friendship.

For Goldberry, it was all around her.

It was the way the trees danced as she passed. The way she spun in the circle of the sweet smelling grove, a festival for all that was green. The way the wind was her partner, that steadied and swayed her. The way the blades of summer grass did not bend under her feet, but yet became a part of her as she moved through them, each hers and their own selves at once. The way the leaves rustled and whispered, a language meant only for her. The way the soil beneath her feet stuck to her soles, crept in and in, and went with her on all her adventures. The way the earth could hear her everywhere as she walked and she could hear it, could feel it, all of it, calling to her.

The way the water leapt at her appearance, shined and glistened and surged for her. The way the fish and water nymphs danced on top of the water, in sync and rhythm with its waves, and let her join them in their celebration. The way the beavers and badgers and possums played and scampered at her feet, lay with her in the sun, let her witness them like no other was allowed. The way the trees left gifts of leaves and twigs and bark in her hair, never snagging, but gently placing as she twirled beneath their branches and canopies. The way the berries tasted all the sweeter just for her and gave her the gift of their lives and then grew again just the same. The way the honey bees came to greet her and lead her to their hives, let her taste of their livelihood and buzzed with delight when she thanked them. The way the sun beat down on her face and warmed her and filled her and made her whole.

The way the world around her was one and the same as her and they were joined in something that Goldberry had no name for, but could only call friendship.
