Dedication: For
caera1996, who asked for Kirk/McCoy, old friends, new lovers. Merry Christmas, babe!
Christmas decorations on the Starship Enterprise. Kirk didn’t know who was behind it - Sulu probably had something to do with it - but he liked it. It looked nice. It looked festive.
The captain leaned in a doorway and took in the colored lights and green boughs hanging around about the only home he’d ever really known.
“How many holiday seasons do you think we’ve spent together, Bones?” he asked, when his medical officer stepped into the doorway next to him.
“Gee, I don’t know, sir. I don’t really keep count of the number of Christmas celebrations we are forced to endure.”
“You’re grumpy about Christmas?” Kirk asked him, without looking over. “Christmas?”
“The crew gets all rowdy,” Bones mumbled.
“As I recall, you tend to get rowdy at Christmas as well, Bones.”
“One year and that eggnog was spiked with something stronger than vodka, let me tell you,” Bones protested.
“I still can’t believe you know all the verses to O’ Christmas Tree.”
Bones narrowed his eyes at his captain and said, “I actually have business to discuss with you, sir.”
Kirk leaned back against the doorframe and rolled his head to one side to eye his friend. “It’s the holiday season, Bones. Take a minute.”
“Someone has to keep this ship in the air, sir.”
Kirk was going to say something clever then - as soon as he thought of something clever to say - but he was cut off by Lieutenant Uhura stopping short in front of them and breaking out in a rather frightening grin.
“I knew it!” she declared with enthusiasm.
“Feeling alright, Lieutenant?” Kirk asked her, while Bones just furrowed his brow.
“Not half as good as you, I suspect,” she said and then made a noise that sounded suspiciously like a giggle.
Bones and Kirk both pushed up off the doorframe to stare at her with wide eyes.
“No, no,” she said and waved a hand at them. “Carry on. As your were, gentlemen,” and she walked off, laughing under her breath.
“Did Sulu spike the eggnog again?” Bones asked.
“Is there eggnog?” Kirk asked, looking around himself as if the answer might be right there on the intersection of the main hallway.
“I feel like we missed a punch-line or something.”
“Hmmm,” Kirk mused and then stood up only mildly straighter as Spock approached them both.
“There is much Earth lore on the matter,” Spock said, as if right in the middle of a conversation that Bones and Kirk had missed most of already. “Most notably that it is a symbol of love, based on the myth of Frigga and her son, Balder, returned to her from the dead.”
“We should look into that eggnog theory of yours, Bones,” Kirk said, leaning slightly closer to his friend.
Bones just furrowed his brow even tighter.
“I believe is it customary to kiss now,” Spock told them and continued on his way, pushing past them both in the doorframe.
“What?!” Bones shouted to no one in particular.
“Mistletoe!” Kirk shouted.
“What?!” Bones shouted again.
Kirk looked up and there, sure enough, hanging over their heads was a bough of mistletoe. He should thank Sulu, right before he put him on extra duties.
“I…He…It…bloody holidays,” Bone sputtered out.
“It is tradition, Bones,” Kirk told him with a smirk. “When one is so far from home, it is even more important to keep up with the normal customs, one would say.”
“Jim, now listen…” Bones started, but the captain just grinned and cupped a hand around the back of Bones’ neck. And, to be honest, there wasn’t really any resistance there at all.
Kirk pulled his friend in then, tilted their heads just so and met their lips somewhere in the middle. It was soft, slow, but not as tentative as Kirk would have thought and when Bones’ tongue snaked out for a brief moment, Kirk opened for him immediately.
Bones’ hands found their way to Kirk’s hips and Kirk’s one free hand - the one that was not cupping the back of Bones’ neck, threading his fingers through the short hairs there - found its way up under the hem of Bones’ shirt, fingertips brushing his skin ever-so-slightly.
Bones pushed Kirk back, a half step, into the doorframe behind him, pressed his own body forward another half step, until they were right against one another, right there, connected from their mouths to their hips and Kirk’s hand wandered farther up, across Bones’ abdomen and Bones shuddered and gasped into his captain’s mouth.
“Jim,” he whispered and it may have been the softest, quietest word Kirk had ever heard from his medical officer.
“You said you had important business to discuss with me,” Kirk said and didn’t sound nearly as casual as he would have liked.
“I did,” Bones agreed, but his eyes were locked onto Jim’s mouth and Jim’s fingertips were still toying with the hem of Bones’ shirt.
“Perhaps we should take this conversation elsewhere then?” Kirk said, one corner of his mouth turning upwards, followed shortly by the other.
“What?” Bones asked and his eyes snapped up to meet Jim’s own.
“I do have some luxurious quarters, you know,” Kirk told him and then Bones was pressing in again, latching onto Kirk like he was holding all the oxygen in all the galaxies.
“Yes, let’s do that then,” Bones breathed out between kisses. “That sounds…yes.”
“Lost your words, Doctor?” Kirk asked with a tease.
“I seem to have, yes, Captain,” Bones told him, pulling back, albeit a bit reluctantly. “Perhaps I should search for them on your person.”
“Why, Dr. McCoy, I do believe you’re flirting with me,” Kirk said and then pulled the other man along after him by the hem of his shirt.
The twinkling lights draped along the hallway blinked at them as they went by and Kirk skirted his fingertips across Bones’ skin once more and said, “See, Bones, the holidays aren’t so bad, after all.”
The End
