I think the difference is mainly the roles the two characters had on the show at that point. The Brig was still a relevant presence in the whoniverse, but Sarah Jane was a major recurring character spearheading her own spin-off. Additionally, the Brig was an old man, whereas Sarah Jane was still very active and vital as a middle aged woman with teenagers

I like how they handled the Brig's death. He was always in the back of the Doctor's mind since he was a major part of his Third regeneration and appeared throughout. It would've been nice to see him one more time but the fact that he keeps being mentioned makes it even better. And that he always set a place for the Doctor when it came to brandy was awesome.

As much it would kill me to see it, I would like to see Sarah Jane's death mentioned in Whoverse. Just to see how the Doctor would react to it. They could bring it up in the 50th Anniversary just because I think 10 and Four (if he appears) will have the biggest reactions to it. Though I think Eleven will have an awkward moment about it in the end.

The Doctor Who Magazine also publshed an exclusive all Sarah Jane issue. It's a little pricey for a magazine but I highly recommend it just for the transcript of the Sarah Jane invterview made a couple of years before the Nu Who series started. It is a gem and well worth the cost of the magazine. I like this issue best as a tribute, because it is something you can have at the house and hold on to. I hope they do an issue for other members of the cast who have passed on. As to the show, I'm happy to believe that in the Doctor's verse--the Sarah Jane Adventures continue....
