Membership : Update

May 20, 2007 04:11

I'm posting this for the benefit of the many former members of doctorwho_eps who may be confused and/or frustrated with the delay in inviting most of you back.

First, I'd like to apologize. I understand that the situation might be upsetting to many of you. All I can do is assure you that we would never have taken such as extreme measure as removing our entire membership if we had any other choice. We love this community, and we've been putting countless hours of work into it on a weekly basis for a very long time now. The last thing we want to do is hurt our members, so I hope that you believe me when I say that the only reason we did it was to protect our members - you all - even though it may not seem that way right now. If you can't believe that, then at least trust that we wouldn't have added so substantially to our own (already insane) workload if we did not feel it was absolutely necessary.

Second, I'd like to update you on the situation as it stands. We have started inviting people back in. As planned, we started with a small group of friends and frequent posters, and over the past 9 days, we've been expanding that circle, with each member vouching for their friends, and those friends vouching for their friends and so on, so that the community is regrowing exponentially. Unfortunately, the process is going more slowly than we'd anticipated, due to LJ's policies. The sad fact is, there is a limit on how many outstanding invites a community can have at any given time. In other words, we have to wait till someone who's been invited accepts their invitation in order to send out another invitation, and with an invite limit of approximately 1% of our former membership, the process is slowed down considerably, even though we make a point of contacting every person with an outstanding invite to try and speed things along.

Some things I'd like to make clear:

- There is nothing we can do about LJ's limit on outstanding invitations.

- We can't make this go any faster, as the process is entirely dependent on the speed with which each person accepts our invites.

- Only a fraction of the members who have already been invited in are people we know personally. The vast majority are people we know nothing about, other than the fact that someone who was invited back before them trusts them.

- We do not play favorites; each member can vouch for whomever they choose as soon as they re-join.

- We are well aware that many of you have questions, but we simply can't answer them right now, so I'm sorry, but you'll just have to wait.

We are all frustrated with this grueling process; just as you are frustrated with having to wait a while longer to rejoin the community, those who've joined are frustrated with the fact that their friends haven't been able to join yet, and us mods are frustrated with the huge amount of work involved, and how little control we have over how quickly we can get the community back to normal, which is our goal.

All I can do is ask for your continued patience, and remind you once again that contacting us will serve absolutely no purpose, so please don't do it. We're doing everything we can, as fast as we can, and nothing you say or do will change that.
