Last night I helped bid a fond farewell to my dear friend LH, who I've known since she came to work at school about six years ago. She was one of my best friends at school - heck, she was just one of my best friends, period. Smart, funny, compassionate, and a great drinking buddy,we hit it off from the first, and Ii'll miss her a ton. The going-away party was just held at a self-described dive bar called the
Backstage Bar and Grill in Culver City. It has much to recommend it - convenient, free on-street parking if one arrives early, $4 pints of Newcastle Brown Ale, and a pretty decent karaoke DJ. Beware the drunk-when-they-get-there birthday partyers, though - I'm wondering of Thursday might be a bit more open to the casual karaoke vocalist. Still and all, a good time was had by all. I received kudos from strangers for my rendition of "Mack the Knife" (honed at two Limbo Lounges now) and totally botched a version of "Sixteen Tons" where the tempo was much faster than I was expecting. Feh. I had hopes of more songs, but the signup list was darned crowded - they do karaoke on Thurs-Fri-Sat, so maybe a Thurs. would be less crowded... Perhaps an exploratory outing should be arranged... Hmmm...
Of course, if anybody knows a good karaoke joint elsewhere...
But for LH, you'll be missed, but never forgotten, and we will hopefully start a new annual tradition of getting together on the Friday After Thanksgiving.
In other news, I plunked down a decent chunk of the piggybank savings I've been hoarding to purchase a gas grill. They'll assemble for me and deliver it next week (then because it's the only day somebody will definitely be home to sign for it). So there will be grilling in my future!
