"But I don't know where to watch Classic Who!" Turlough is judging you so hard right now.

I'm really surprised at how often I hear from New Who fans that they want, they really waaaaaant to watch Classic, but they can't afford to buy that many DVDs and they just don't know where to watch it online! Really, are you all THAT not-internet-savvy? Because I don't think I'm terribly savvy and yet I found it pretty easy to google "where to ( Read more... )

IT'S ON NETFLIX!!!! JAY-SUS!

I think that New Who and Old Who are different shows with different fans. There is not perfect overlap between the groups of fans. I've sort of fallen out of love with New Who. It's not giving me what I want from Dr. Who any more. It's a totally different experience.

Old Who was more about the intellect and solving mysteries and the long form. Old Who was patterned like a radio serial, "Tune in Next Week...".New Who is more One or two episode form, adventure, action, and FEELS. It's modern. I'm not sure it is improved.

And no. They don't want to, because there is little male eye-candy compared to the current series. The actors have bad teeth and funny haircuts and unattractive costumes. Some of the Doctors are *gasp* old! It also is flat out sexist at times, because of when it was written. It can be cringe worthy. The bad special effects are AWESOME, though!

Also, if you say you are a HUUUUGE Doctor Who fan and you even don't know who Romana is...go away. I have nothing to say to you. We are not watching the same show. Yep. I am that much of a snob.

Mind you, it's not all on netflix, but at least significant chunks of it are!

And I'm that much of a snob too. Tbh, while I still like New Who, I really feel a lot of it pales in comparison to Classic. I just find myself much more drawn to the old series, the pacing, characterization, how it sometimes feels oddly less sexist in places. Having seen Every Episode Ever Made (notwithstanding the missing episodes I can't see, but have at least been able to listen to with pictures) going back and watching New episodes now feels sometimes a little bit too whoosh-whoosh-run-run-run-explode-explode-feelings The End for me to get invested. I zone out when there's too much epic action happening all at once in a story. I can't pay attention through that stuff. I like cliffhangers. Some of the really good ones I'll still sort of leap to the edge of my seat and shout BUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT at my television even though I'm going to watch the next episode straight away anyway.

I also think a lot of the effects do actually look really good. I mean, sometimes I cringe a bit (like Six AND Mel standing against a CSO background of space? Greenscreen + that much fizzy hair = nope) but honestly, so much of the designs and stuff do actually hold up really well. I just rewatched The Robots Of Death, and the sets and costumes in that one are phenomenally good by any standards.

I do think you're right about Classic and New basically being two fandoms, overlapping but different. I know some people who want everyone to embrace absolutely all of the show equally, but I don't know if that's necessary or true. I feel kind of bad when New Who fans follow my tumblr, because honestly, there's not going to be a lot on my blog that they can relate to, like, unless they're as attracted to Nicholas Courtney as I am.

(Have I ever told you how much I love that icon? Dean Learner was genuinely the greatest actor of all time.)
