"But I don't know where to watch Classic Who!" Turlough is judging you so hard right now.

I'm really surprised at how often I hear from New Who fans that they want, they really waaaaaant to watch Classic, but they can't afford to buy that many DVDs and they just don't know where to watch it online! Really, are you all THAT not-internet-savvy? Because I don't think I'm terribly savvy and yet I found it pretty easy to google "where to ( Read more... )

I do sort of understand being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of it; not knowing where to start and not having that much time to spare can be daunting. And if you don't know where to start, you might put off looking for them... but if that's the case, you're probably not going to lament this fact on the internet, and definitely not claim it's because they're so hard to find.

Then again I'm hardly an authority, because I don't think my Who-watching has been very conventional. I put off watching New Who for almost six months because I don't torrent, and reliable download links or streaming sites were hard to find (I am a big internet wuss). And I didn't become a Whovian until I started watching the classic series, so before a friend made me try it I didn't actually feel the urge or need to find it.

When I did, I either watched them at a friend's place or bought recommended serials on DVD. I live in Sweden; they're not the easiest (or cheapest) to come by here (they still haven't restocked the Silurian boxset since I bought it a year ago). And a couple of months later I was informed about Dailymotion through watchalongs, and come summer break I started watching a minimum of two serials per day to catch up on the decades I'd missed...

I don't really get frustrated as much as kind of sad when people use that excuse anymore, though. Classic Who has given me so much in regards to fandom community, and I don't think I've ever been in a fandom where I've loved so many characters. Also, we have Big Finish. And if the New Who fandom knew how awesome Big Finish is they would be jealous. :'D

I confess that I was a big weirdo apparently and decided that the best way to go about it was to start with the first episode and then go entirely in the right order until I got to the end. I don't expect anybody else to be quite that rigorously linear, though, but just googling "where to watch Classic Who" brings up a link to a tumblr post with links to all the serials on dailymotion. I'm most specifically thinking of the defensive "don't hate me because I haven't seen Classic Who because I caaaaaaaaan't!" posts because, like, you super can, you just don't want to say that you don't want to.
