Every second weekend, and some Wednesdays after school, if Mum had tennis lessons and Dad wasn't on an emergency, Kate went round to her Dad's for a visit. He always made hot cocoa and Swedish pancakes, which he knew were her favourites, and even when she tired of hot cocoa and Swedish pancakes, she quietly refrained from saying so, because it was what she and her father always did when she came to visit. She relished her weekends with him: picking flowers in the park, straining to understand the cricket match, and listening to her Dad's stories about his work at the army. She knew the real work they did was all very super-secret - probably like the dapper heroes she watched on television, she thought - but he would tell her about the nice people he worked with, that sergeant who made the best coffee in the world, and clever assistants he always said she would get on with if they met, and a funny scientist called the Doctor and the amazing things he could do.
Kate decided she wanted to be a funny scientist when she grew up, too.
