Doctor Who goes to Hollywood - Matt Smith reveals his career plans
by Mark Jefferies, Daily Mirror 4/06/2011
HE’S best known for travelling through time as Doctor Who, but actor Matt Smith is planning a new journey - to Hollywood.
Matt, the current eleventh incarnation of the Time Lord who is adored by the sci-fi show’s millions of fans, has revealed he is hoping to make his mark in the movies.
“I’m going over to Los Angeles this week to dip my head in the pond,” Matt reveals. “I am going to be having loads of meetings with film people and that sort of stuff.
“I have a lot of ambitions. I would like one day to direct and I just want to keep doing quality work. LA is kinda groovy - I really like it out there.”
Matt, 28, will discuss potential scripts and audition for roles which could make him a global star.
But he’s cautious of the fact that many Brits who head to the United States hoping to make it big end up returning with their tails between legs - like Cheryl Cole for instance.
“I take each day as it comes,” says Matt wisely. “You can only try your best and see what rubs off.
“Would I get a big part, who knows? Sadly, that is not up to me.
“That all depends on people in the American film industry and whether they want to put me there.
“But I certainly won’t complain if that happens.”
However, before we start seeing Matt’s name on billboards alongside the likes of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, there is the small matter of his day job - saving the universe as Doctor Who.
Tonight’s episode of the hit BBC1 show is called A Good Man Goes To War. It is the final episode before the drama takes a break for the summer.
Show boss Steven Moffat promised a cliffhanger and he wasn’t kidding, getting fans salivating at the news that the mystery surrounding the true identity of time-travelling character River Song - played by Alex Kingston - will be solved.
“All of the wondering about River Song, not only for the Doctor, but for the fans of Doctor Who, comes to an end - or I should say it reaches a point where it can be developed further,” Matt explains, barely able to contain his excitement.
“It is a big, huge, giant, whopping classic sci-fi revelation at the end of the episode.
“Anyone who has predicted it must be very clever and those that haven’t are going to be very shocked.”
The episode also shows a new dark and broody side to the Time Lord as he seeks to find and free companion Amy Pond from her mysterious captors.
Matt explains: “Steven wanted this episode to be about what happens when the Doctor gets angry.
“He explores that in this episode and it was a lot of fun to play because it was unknown territory for me to play in many ways as the Doctor.
“If you take away the one thing that the Doctor truly loves - which is Amy Pond - you are going to see him get angry with the rest of the universe.”
Last week’s adventure ended with the revelation that Amy, played by Karen Gillan, is pregnant but Matt won’t spoil the plot surprise by revealing exactly what happens to the child.
While the actor thinks Amy will make a good mother, he says it’s a little early for 23-year-old Karen to be thinking about having babies.
“Amy Pond would make a great mum,” says the actor. “With her husband Rory there to back her up she would be absolutely fantastic.
“I think Miss Gillan herself probably has a few years of living left in her though.
“In real life I think she is not ready to be a mum - she has got a lot to do first in terms of work and travel.”
Matt says working with Scot Karen is “bliss”. The pair’s friendship has blossomed since they both joined the show at the same time about 18 months ago and that has helped them to strike up great chemistry on screen.
Away from Doctor Who, Matt’s female companion in real life is stunning model girlfriend Daisy Lowe, 22. She accompanied Matt to the Bafta awards last month when he was nominated for a best actor prize, the first Time Lord star to be shortlisted.
Speaking to the Mirror at a party after the Baftas, Matt admits he is “lucky” to have found Daisy.
The star says: “The workload and the level of attention you get in this role of Doctor Who are significant, but hopefully you can find someone that supports you, which I am lucky to have.”
Asked what it is like for her to date an actor who is regularly mobbed by female Doctor Who fans when he goes out, Matt replies: “That is a question really for Daisy, not for me.
“One hopes it is a pleasant experience to be going out with me.
“If you were an astronaut, the Prime Minister or a brain surgeon, I think that would be harder because they are dealing with life and death every day.”
Rather than taking his girlfriend out to fancy restaurants all the time, Matt has been wining and dining her at home as she teaches him how to cook.
And while he may be a wizard with a sonic screwdriver, he still has a lot to learn when it comes to rolling pins, wooden spoons and whisks.
“Daisy is a much better cook than I am - she can bake and everything,” he says, sounding a little jealous.
“I am definitely the number two in the kitchen, but it is great.
“I cooked us a spaghetti bolognese the other day - that took a whole three hours but it was good.
“I find cooking therapeutic and you can be creative. It’s good fun.”
Matt has now been playing the Doctor since taking over from David Tennant December 2009 and sources say he will be in the role until at least Christmas.
But speculation has grown that he will depart at some point in 2012 after his Doctor was shown “dying” in the first episode of the current series.
Matt says: “It is incredibly exciting as a sci-fi fan.
“That first episode opens up so many questions and layers.
“This series really is challenging Doctor Who fans to uncover things and peel the layers away.
“Having the Doctor die in the first episode makes them think ‘how can this work in this universe?’
“What is it about? Who is behind it? It wasn’t really discussed before the scene happened. Steven is in charge of all things narrative - I just turn up and try to get the lines in the right order.”
As the youngest ever Doctor, Matt could even quit the role and then return in a couple of decades time - and still not be too old for it.
But he insists that when he calls time on life in the Tardis, that will really be it for him in Doctor Who’s world.
Matt says: “No Doctor has ever been back. I think once you have had your stint that is it.
“It is a wild wave when you get to surf it, and I think you have to make the most of it while you can.
“The show by its very nature is about reinvention, it is about new things.
“So I think once my time comes to a close that will be it.”
3Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes To War is on BBC1 at 6.40pm tonight. The show returns with six new episodes in the autumn.
