Still in the infirmary

Kavanagh was still stuck in the infirmary. Nick and David both had to leave for a while but had promised to be back and help his convince the medical staff he was fit enough to at least be sent back to their quarters on bed rest. Lots of bed rest. Less emphasis on the rest ( Read more... )

Saera wandered into the infirmary. David wasn't available for an introduction - something about plants urgently needing repotting - but he was her boss, she'd need to stop by at some point, and the sooner the better.

"Doctor Kavanagh?" she said, finding him staring at a report. "Dr. Saera Parrish, acting Chem lead. I think you know my brother?"

He looked up from the computer. His mouth literally dropping open. He worked to get the shock under control.

"Acting chem lead? You've barely turned 25. Which idiot decided you could run *my* department?"

He hadn't meant to snap at her. Apparently that was just his natural reaction when put in unexpected situations.

"The idiot that noticed that, not only did I almost manage to stop Dr. Johnson from blowing up half the lab and killing himself, I was the only one that was willing to do something about getting the department moving again afterwards," she replied. "I agree that I'm too young and inexperienced to be running the department. But the rest of them are worse. Can I assume from your surprise that David didn't tell you I was here, either? I really need to work on him about that whole talking to people thing..."

"Almost." Kavanagh repeated softly, he frowned, his eyes falling towards the floor. He was well aware that most people thought he was incapable of feeling, especially his staff. But he did care about them, in an odd 'mentor' sort of way. "I go away for a few weeks and you morons blow up a lab!" He said quickly to cover it.

"Don't talk about my staff like that." He snapped again. "I can do it. They're my staff. But I also handpicked each and every one of them. What about Simpson or Andreoli? They usually manage to be less retarded then the rest of the group." He shook his head. "Let me guess, you batted those pretty little lashes at someone, probably McKay or one of his little lackies."

He calmed down a little at the mention of David, smiling softly. "No, he didn't say anything. We've had better things to talk about!"

Rodney hesitated in the doorway. He really didn't want to do this, but he was Kavanagh's boss and acting head while Elizabeth...well...he wasn't quite sure what Elizabeth had been up to these last few weeks. In any case, he had to do this. Besides, Rae would kill him if he didn't.

With one last sigh, Rodney steps into the room. He's dressed in civvies--blue button down and blue jeans--since he's still technically off on medical leave. He stops at the bottom of Kavanagh's bed. "Kavanagh. Welcome back. I can honestly say that Atlantis wasn't the same without you."

David's sister had just left a few minutes ago. He'd gone back to his laptop but was idly wondering about what he should call her. "Dr. Parrish or just Parrish, immediately flashed a mental picture of David so he'd never manage to be appropriately annoyed with her. Saera seemed far too personal though and he was not about to be on first name basis with the minions. Maybe just 'oi you' would do.

He's bought out of his ruminations by McKay's snappy tone and he stares at him in astonishment. "First McGregor comes and leaves soup now you plus a female version of David. Did I somehow manage to step into some weird alternate universe?" He snapped back.

Rodney grinned. It was good to have Kavanagh back. His voice still held the accent of a French Canadian as he spoke; he'd likely always have it now. "No, not that I'm aware of. Shenzi just cares. You were missed. I will never, ever say this again so you better pay attention ( ... )

Kavanagh opened his mouth to protest before deciding that very, very occasionally listening to McKay might be a good idea. So he listened. Apparently the drugs were having an effect because McKay was making him feel odd in a strange pleasant way. He decided to wait until there was a pause to return some of the sentiment. But by the time McKay stopped his mind was focused only on 'funeral'.

Until then it hadn't really sunk in that he'd everyone had considered him dead. What the implications of that may have been. No wonder three people in a row had just told him that Nick and David had been in an awful state. By the time he's recovered enough to say something McKay is out of the door already.

He reaches for his laptop and opens the email browser. Like a band-aid it's probably best to get this done quickly.

~Email to Dr. McKay~Whatever drugs your husband has me on are obviously affecting my higher brain functions leaving me with a sudden urge to do this. You really are brilliant. You ruin it with your carelessness, ( ... )

Radek slowly walked into the room and over to stand beside Kavanagh's bed. He studies the injured chemist, then after a moment says, "Hello, Kavanagh."

"I am...please that you haven't left us for good." He smiled faintly. "Life, I think, would be quite boring without you."

Kavanagh gapes at him, mouth slightly open. The emotion of the day already throwing him off balance.

"Seriously has everyone on Atlantis been affected by some kind of mind-altering substance or are you just confusing me with someone else." He complains, but there's no real heat in it and just a brief hint of a smile plays across his lips.

"I guess it's like that Chinese curse, Miko is always spouting. May you live in interesting times." He adds thoughtfully, with a chuckle. "Well I'm glad I can be a curse for you Ra-Zelenka."

Radek practically beamed at Kavanagh. "You were missed a great deal." He chuckled along with Kavanagh. "You may call me Radek, Kavanagh. It took some time, but I have come to realize that, in a way, you were responsible for Rachel and I coming together. Thank you for that." Radek patted Kavanagh's hand lightly. "I forgive you. I only hope you may one day forgive me for my actions that day."

After a moments pause, he added, "Just don't ever do it again, please? The bitching I had to endure from Rodney over hunting out those bugs is not something I could care to repeat. He was seriously worried that the Wraith or the Genii or even the Trust had planted them and were spying on us."
