How I Vote

Nov 04, 2008 18:38

Walking home in the rain (has anyone else noticed it always rains on Election Day?), feeling like I've done my two cents, I started realizing that I vote in a rather unconventional way. It's an easy method, and doesn't require a lot of thought and no it's not a blitzkrieg of selecting whatever; there is a process. When I look at the little computer screen - I see stuff laid out in three parts and here's how I interpret them.

A. WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT
This one is really a no brainer. You like who you like, right? One of the qualities that I'm looking for in my elective is somebody that I can talk to about music. Really. If I'm stranded on the metaphorical desert island with one of those guys, I'm not going to be able to relate to any jibba jabba of the political variety. I wanna know what's on their iPod. And with that being said, I think Obama will reign supreme. We can wax philosophic about "Born in the USA" and what new indie bands he endorses. Clearly the musical world has endorsed him: from Jay-Z to Arcade Fire and the Village People to Wilco. In McCain's corner: probably the Nuge. Maybe ZZ Top.

B. SHOULD BLAH BLAH BLAH STAY IN OFFICE
Look man, everyone deserves a turn. You ride your go kart, and you go the back of the line to ride again. It's a very simple aesthetic. I don't know your name, and honestly I don't know what you've done in your term. I don't care enough that I want to find out. I am sympathetic to two causes on this part. I keep the women in office. Women, and men with funny names. I think I saw a Zarkov on the ticket tonight. With a name like that, he deserves to stay for a little while longer. Everyone else? Don't bogart the salsa, dude.

C. ALLOCATE AWAY
I get a little intimidated reading these long paragraphs with their lofty sums. Do you want to give to schools? Roads? Parks? Water treatment? Of course I do, but I can't give to everybody. I started feeling like the little virtual Mayor of your SimCity. You start out with 20,000. What do you build? Power plant, homes, zones, and roads. I don't recall farms in that game, and plumbing was nothing but a headache when it came about in SimCity 2000. And yes, given the choice between the casino and the amusement park - I choose the casino, and it's going right next to my house.

I must admit it was a very speedy process. Even nearing 5:30-6:00 I was in and out in a minute. Though they probably should start checking ID at these things. Anybody could have come up and said my name and birthday, then signed a piece of paper and they would have been off stealing my voting practices.
