Home Truly is Where the Heart Is

Entry for Thursday, 3 September 2009

It is good to be home. I had not forgotten the deep greens and tall trees that surround our house. I had set those memories aside while I traveled in Crete with Daughter. The tan colors of late summer in that dry island state contrast so perfectly with the deep blue sea that is forms its borders, that the contrast is beauty beyond perfection.
I took pictures of the 300-foot windmill towers on both ends of Crete. The folks in charge are smart enough to know that tourists do NOT want to see High Tech when traveling around an island that has had humans clambering over its spine for nearly three thousand years (THREE THOUSAND YEARS). The towers have three blade turbines spinning in the constant breeze. The blades are 100 feet long and make a "Whooshing" sound with each revolution. Yes, yes, I know that it should be a constant susurration echo that roiled amidst the stanchions, but it was a woofing sound that I heard as each blade swept by and then climbed up while the next descended within the shushing wind that pushed against me while I listened. I found NO dead birds under the towers. I'm not surprised, though I imagined that there would be many based on the news accounts put out by bird lovers trying to keep windmills off hilltops in Vermont.
And At Home: Life goes on. The trees have not yet turned. The dogs want to hike and I'm stuck at work late into the evening such that arrival home provides NO chance of a walk in the woods. I am ready for early arrival at home.
Daughter reports all is well. Even though she complained that having visitors exhausts her, it was good to know that the exhaustion is one of delight as opposed to frustration. I am, according to her, an easy visitor. I am happy to be such and hope to continue expanding my skills in this arena as time passes.
My siblings liked my note regarding the visit. The pictures - pretty much what I posted on the blog - and the accompanying notes were enough to convey my delight and show them WHY I was delighted. I'm a happier lad as well.

More later,
