Squeek came back from the bike repairers with a new everything, at least on initial examination. New tubes, tyres, handlebar grips & cables, plus a bit of a tune-up.
Also, I bought a helmet.
Went for a trial ride yesterday, and did not die, though Holy Crap does my fitness suck.
Today's cycling test was to cycle to the end of the cycle path into town, to see how bad it was going to be. As it turns out, it's slightly uphill most of the way, with a couple of spectacularly nasty bits at the end, and I suspect it'll be a while before I can ride that and make it up the hill onto K' Rd.
Thus, the approximate plan is to leave it a day or so, then cycle into work, walking the bike up the hill and re-mounting once I get to a flatter bit. Then, a few days later, cycle home again.
Cycling home could well suck; The only sensible route is Anzac Ave & Symonds St, then along K' Rd and back down the cycle path. On the plus side, most of the cycle path is a gentle downhill; I hit 26km/h at one point on a downhill.
