I'll get this out of the way first. I'm not editing this. Warned.
I'm not going to be able to make it to coronation like I thought I would. Things have just been getting progessively more busy and I ned this weekend to sweep my shit into a pile.
Second. I got a call that my Uncle Steve was in the hospital last night. He ended up wrecking his back at work. This was not a "Oh I pulled a muscle but a full blown "send me to a different hospital with better kind of medication" sor t of thing. The harshest part is that it was at work. Now many of you out in the wires and lights from here have missed out on the hellishness that is factory work. If you want more information on what it is like to kill yourself in a hot box or refrigerator...well rather than explain it, I will refer you to "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. There really are few differences from then to now. I have worked in various types of meat machines for a third of my life.
Anyway, he is laid up and is scared of losing the shitty job he has. There is no real fight against the company actually paying his WC claim,. however, there are some fears that will need to be addressed.
1) Due to the amount of pain, my uncle was forced to take painkillers before he could take his urine test. He was repeatedly told that he needed to take the medication and he repeatedly told them that he couldn't take anything until after his drug test was taken. Unfortuantely, the amount of pain bested him and he took the meds.
2) Secondly, this company has a tendancy, once a person is in the hospital, to put them to work again in another position that they make up, then, after the person has been in the job for a while will terminate the position, thus terminating the employee.
My uncle has been talking with a lawyer already; however, the attorney spines in this area regarding factories tend to turn to Jello and finding lawyers that are willing to take cases like this tend towards the shady.
Now, I am showing my prejudice against factories and it is one of the few prejudices I have little interest in losing. I have seen so many people eaten by large metal machines pulling out chip clips and coffee mugs...godDMANIT! people are not just sacks of fucking blood put on the planet to make sure we get fucking garbage bags and twist ties!
Ethics and law. It is not illegal to be a fucking vampire as long as you don't take the blood through your teeth. It is not illegal to work a person into the dirt, knowing they don't have a choice. It is not illegal to request that a person work 12 hours a day in 100 degree heat building truses as long as they don't fall down and they get under 40 hours. It is not illegal to mind fuck you, debase you or intimidate you as long as they aren't looking at your chest. It is not every persons right to have happiness, only their right to pursue it: meaning that they don't have to treat you like a human being, they only need to give you that hope. OUr OSEA laws are ineffective, and that 1 to 2% of the WC cases that have been victimizing those poor multi-million dollar factories have made laws so strict that if you hold up the nub of a mutilated hand an employer only needs to say: "Well they have the other one, he was like that when we hired him, this is going to raise our taxes."
