I don't read fiction related to Light, so my opinion about him is solely based on canon.

I used to dislike him a lot when he started killing innocent people, for I realized that Light doesn't really love the humanity as he always claims. In the end, everything Light did was for his own good. This is what L had in mind when he provoked Light for the first time; he suspected that Kira was just a kid with a god complex, and just a small provocation would be enough to make him react in order to assert and prove his power. Had Light been doing everything solely for the sake of humanity, he wouldn't have cared about what L had to say about him, so long as he was certain that what he was doing was the right thing to do.

But in the end, I think that I've gained a lot of respect for Light. He was a jerk, hands down, for he didn't care about how many innocent people had to go down for the sake of his personal glory, but I've developed a lot of respect for his intelligence. He was really smart, ambitions, and unique, and he alone accomplished things that no one had done before. I also applaud his passion poured into everything he does-- I just have weakness for passionate characters.
So, getting a bit into the Near mindset that this is merely a game... Light was a great opponent, and he made things really interesting while they lasted.

(On a side note, I can't help but to find it funny that one of the reasons why people hate Light is because he killed a secondary, unimportant random character as Matt *sweatdrops*. It wasn't even Light the one who did it!)

*Amused* It's surprising that Matt's death was used as the main example of why fans could hate Light, instead of L's death which is the most important.

I think it was when Light killed Raye Penbur that I realized he was not living up to his own ideals. Raye was just a good cop. And on top of that, he kills Naomi, because she could reveal his identity as Kira. Those deaths, to me, were way more pivotal in revealing Light's character than the death of Matt (who we only saw briefly before he died, and by then, the body count was huge).

And of course, while I love Raye and I love Naomi, I think that is one of my favorite parts of the series: the tension and the camera angles are great. Raye seeing Light as Kira on the train before he dies is so tragic. And sadly, it makes me like Light more for his intelligence and ability to play the game. Even though it is an evil game.

Same here, Raye and Naomi's deaths did it for me. I remember that I cheered for Light in the very beginning, because I liked the fact that he wanted to clean the world from those who disrespect life. But then the way he killed Raye was cruel as the people that Light claimed to be against, so I realized that Kira was no hero and no savior.
