Of Liking Yagami Light (and/or any other character)
(Please forgive me for this mediocre discussion prompt if it's deemed as so).
There are several reasons as to why Light is a very likable character amongst Death Note fans. The easiest ones to point out are: how he's portrayed as a sophisticated, socially acceptable genius (to which some may assume is bad-ass), his idealism and mentioned philosophies in creating a perfect world, and/or that he's just attractive.
Additionally there are several reasons as to why Light is also unlikable to the public. His beliefs and ideals of society, for one, are as easily disagreeable. Perhaps someone subjectively believes he's too "conceited" or a "mary-sue." (Maybe he's unlikable due to being the cause of Mello and Matt's deaths, as fans point out). The most interesting reason to disliking him, I found, was how some of us just find him cliche or straight out boring personality-wise.
Honestly there isn't a lot that Obha supplies us. There's a lack of character development in Light throughout the series besides Kira and his transformation in becoming a God, so hardly did the creators add much of a background information and personality to him (and forgive the series since its intentions are obviously not to focus on character). We are left to assume the unfilled gaps between the information - as if it were a book missing beginning chapters.
However, should other influences (fan-art, fan-fiction, etc) be considerable factors in liking Light then? For example, there's fanfiction that have written what those authors predicted Light's past experiences to be like, including his popularity status in school, how his intelligence came about, if his hair color is real or not... And those stories can influence another person into liking Light even more, or even make one start to gain a liking. Should fandom ideals be reasons to like Light (or any other character) if the information wasn't part of or even directly mentioned in the official work?
