L and his "Successors"?

Who would L have chosen to be his successor, if he hadn't died so unexpectedly? Was he planning on choosing at all?

To me, I had this feeling that L seemed curiously unconcerned with picking a successor. Or, at least, overconfident that he would need to yet. Naturally, L was still young - he died at age 25 - and that does seem a bit early to be deciding inheritance. On the other hand, if L had truly gone into the Kira case understanding that he might be killed, why didn't he set up more of an emergency backup plan?

On that thought, what was L's relationship with the Wammy's House? Personally, I don't think he was involved - apparently, none of the Wammy kids have seen his face either (though that seems to contradict Near's wearing an L mask at the end of the series). In Another Note, Mello claims to have known L, but in the Near sequel, Ohba contends that none of them knew him personally. At any rate, my personal opinion is that L seems apathetic to Wammy's House and its students, but L is presented as such an enigmatic character that it's hard to know what he really thought.
