!MyGod! Hermione said, turning stunned eyes to him.
" Where did that come from?"
I bought it yesterday morning when I went to Hogsmade.
Hermione blink, twice.
I would have give it to you over breakfast, but you made promise not to mention marriage till we left the Manor. Well, we've left the Manor, Hermione, Draco said, picking up the box and holding it out to her.
"So I'm asking you . . . Will you marry me?
Shock held Hermione, looking around the beautiful garden around them cover on fireflies she took the most important decision in her life.
" Yes, Draco yes"

She hadn’t expected to see what she did.

Picking up the fallen firefly, he looked at it curiously before he aimed his wand at it and whispered something under his breath. With a twitch, the golden light became stronger and the insect took to flight, joining the rest of the fireflies out in the garden.

Hermione watched him as he looked at the flying lights longingly.

He then turned, causing her to duck behind a tree to hide until he passed.

Hermione waited until he joined the Yule Ball, wondering why she never knew that Malfoy could be so kind.

“I’m just saying, you light up like a swarm of fireflies whenever he’s around!”

Hermione looked down her nose at her potions partner, clearly unimpressed.

"Fireflies?"

“Yes! Are you trying to attract a mate, blinking on like some demented little lightning bug whenever he comes to our table?”

“…Firstly, the beetles belonging to the Lampyridae family are neither flies nor bugs, Malfoy. Secondly, yes, I confess I find Professor Snape desirable and wish to attract his attention. Does that bug you?”

“Yes!” Draco slapped his hands over his mouth in horror.

Hermione blushed brighter than a cauldronful of libidinous beetles.

It was quiet, except for the occasional ripple in the lake and the rustling of the grass.

Her head lay on his lap as his fingers threaded through the tangled strands of her hair. In the dark, all he could see was the reflection of dancing lights in her eyes.

“Look,” she whispered. “Non-magical things can be so beautiful too.”

As he eyed the fireflies above, the Malfoy signet ring grew heavy against his finger bone.

The bane of their love.

His fingers trailed to her cheek, and he touched wetness.

Beauty in non-magic. Of course he knew.

Hermione Granger.

"And that's why fireflies glow," Draco said to his son.

Hermione, fixing the blanket spread over the grass, looked at him and arched her brows. "That's not why," she said in familiar scolding tones. "They're looking for mates. It's all chemical."

"That's what I said." Draco put Scorpius on the blanket and leaned over to wrap both arms around Hermione. "They're looking for the part of them that's always been missing, for the other half of their souls." He kissed the tip of her nose and smiled at her shining eyes. "And when they find it, they glow. Like that."

“Daddy look, a lightning bug!”
--

“Look Draco” Hermione pointed upwards.
He chuckled. “They’re just bugs princess”
“Normal by day, extraordinary by night as they light up the darkest of nights. Hardly normal, love.”
Draco thought for a moment before he pulled her closer and whispered “You know what Princess, you’re my firefly.”

--

And she truly was. With a renewed soul, he was capable of love and leading his own life, a life without her. Now staring at his daughter, beaming with eyes like her mother’s, he knew he had found his way out of the darkness all because of her.

The door wouldn’t open.

Hermione considered her options. Alohomora... Deprimo... Confringo?

In the end, she simply put her shoulder to it, and shoved until the gap was big enough to squeeze through.

Inside, her apartment was a jungle.

Literally.

“Malfoy,” she growled, struggling through the ferns, “I’ll Avada you-”

“Surprise!” he cried, as innocent as a pointy cherub.

He’d set a table for two in a grove of Hibiscus trees, under a wide, inky sky lit with dancing fireflies. It was impressive magic.

Hermione refused to return his smile.

But, maybe, she thought, I’ll leave killing him till after dessert.

Hermione lay dying, having taken a direct curse from Draco Malfoy.

How had they come to this?

It seemed like yesterday that they had argued in the park. They argued over fireflies. He told her they were fairies.

It was the first day that she had learned about magic. It was the first day that she hadn’t felt like a freak, that they were others like her.

She thought he was her friend. It hurt terribly when he treated her so maliciously at Hogwarts.

She cried as her vision darkened. She cried for their lost innocence.

She cried for Draco.

“I don’t know why you find these bugs so interesting,” Draco drawled from the front porch steps.

Hermione giggled. “Because they signify summer and innocence. …Didn’t you ever chase them around when you were little?”

He scoffed. “Why would I do such a stupid thing?”

Grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the yard, she said. “Well, that’s got to change. We are going to catch some lightning bugs tonight.”

Rolling his eyes, he decided to appease her. He snatched a close bug out of the air. “There. Satisfied?”

Smiling, she shook her head. “Oh, no. We’re just getting started.”

"Look, I caught one, Daddy!"

Draco kneeled and smiled at his daughter. He glanced curiously at the light illumimating from the jar in her hands.

"You did, Darling!" Draco said enthusiasticly.

"It's hard, ya know, cause' at first they start out dark, but you gotta find the light!" she screamed excitedtly.

Draco smirked lovingly, glancing at his wife who stood directly behind their daughter.

"Hm, you Grangers are always good at finding the light in something dark." Draco whispered. He stared with admiration and love for his wife who smiled down at him.

She had found the light in him.

The magical fireflies danced with a hypnotic glow through the darkened, hushed nursery, circling and dipping past the child’s lazily outstretched hand. Her grey, sleepy gaze was enchanted by the fairies of light her father had conjured to aid her rest.

“She loves this spell,” his wife affectionately whispered, twining her fingers with his, watching the flickering lights lull their sweet baby girl to sleep. “Your magic is so gentle with her. It’s beautiful.”

Draco’s cheeks bloomed with heat. “I just want her to have sweet dreams.”

Hermione quietly coerced him to their bedroom next door. “Tonight, we all will.”

Storming to her window, Hermione yelled, “Get off my property!”

Undaunted, the dimly lit figure below twanged his guitar experimentally.

“You be the fire and I’ll be the fly,
Together we’ll be the brightest
Things in the sky…”

Ginny covered her head, whimpering, “Merlin’s saggy left - ”

“Get out!”

“Tell me why, Hermione,
Your name only rhymes with money?
Wait, I forgot there’s honey,
And also there is bunny…”

“OUT, Malfoy!” She slammed the window shut, then uncharacteristically dissolved into explosive giggles.

“Marry him, Hermione,” begged Ginny. “If you ever loved me, marry him.”

Below, Draco grinned. He’d get her yet.

A light glinted between the trees, soon followed by several others. Draco covered her as they ducked down instinctively, lying on the forest floor with their lungs burning from unreleased air as they waited for the light to reveal friend or foe.

No sound came, and after a quick conversation consisting of Draco raising an eyebrow and Hermione nodding, Draco looked up.

He blinked for a moment as he unexpectedly came face to face with a lightning bug, hovering in front of him. Soon the couple was surrounded, and Hermione let out a relieved laugh. They kissed, calm once more.

Author’s Note: The movie referred to is the beautifully poignant The Grave of the Fireflies.

It was Granger’s fault Goyle was weeping like a girl.

He refused to succumb, telling himself it was just like Granger to assume that watching a Muggle children’s movie about fireflies and graves would somehow change their mind-sets about the War, its repercussions on innocent lives.

Never mind that the story was actually about the heart-wrenching plight of a boy as he tried and failed to keep his little sister alive after their mother was killed in a war; one who thereafter lost hope, and eventually his life.

He refused to succumb, as one tear, and then another, slipped free.

“Do you understand, Granger?” he hissed. “We’re playing this game, and losing will kill me. Do you care at all?”

A galaxy of fireflies danced around them, painting his skin in their light, and she made her choice. She was captivated by his eyes, and for the first time, she hoped he could tell.

“They’re beautiful, aren’t they?” she sighed. Her fingers reached up to trace his jaw. He smiled slightly at her touch. She stood on her tiptoes, her lips grazing his ear.

“Loving you has never been a game,” she whispered, feeling his grin widen against her cheek.

One warm summer evening, dusk was falling upon two young lovers cuddled upon a porch swing overlooking a garden. In the distance, crickets and bullfrogs sang their songs.

Hermione nodded toward some fireflies in the gloaming. "They use bioluminescence to attract a mate."

"That’s what attracted me to you."

"My bum doesn’t glow," she snorted.

"No, but you are very bright."

"Draco, I never knew that your scowling exterior was hiding such wit."

"You love it."

"You just compared me to bugs."

"You made bugs sound sexy with your big words."

"Sexy bugs?!"

"No!" He tapped her forehead. "Sexy brains."

Hermione's cough echoed through the Great Hall and she pulled her robes around her tighter to fight the chill from her cold.

A collective gasp from the other students made her look up. She blinked as the flames from the floating candles left their wicks, formed a ball of light and floated down in front of her. As she touched the ball, it burst into thousands of fireflies, each pulsing and wrapping her in a cocoon of warmth. She gazed around in delight.

Across the Great Hall, Draco lowered his head and smiled, discreetly returning his wand to his robes.

Midnight on the eve of the battle.

The fireflies were dots of hope in an otherwise dark sky.

He caught one, for her.

“As long as it's safe, there's hope.”

She kept it in a tiny jar, around her neck and over her heart.

The morning came slowly, after a night spent with him, under the stars. Heaven for them both.

She fought bravely. Hope was not lost yet.

She kept the firefly under her shirt until the very end, too scared to look.

When she did, the firefly glowed brightly. He was alive.

Her smile lit up the world.
