This really got to me
"He was a competitor, he went out to beat you every day," A's third base coach Ron Washington said. "And he did what he could to help his teammates beat you."
Washington said that he heard the news just before it was time for the A's to begin batting practice.
"A lot of good guys are adventurers," Washington said. "I just wish they'd think about their families."
There was a moment of silence for Lidle before Game 2 of the ALCS here in Oakland on Wednesday, and among the many sobering thoughts to emerge in tragic moments like these is this: Had the Yankees defeated Detroit in their first-round playoff series, Lidle almost certainly wouldn't have been piloting that plane.
Instead, he would have been at Yankee Stadium, preparing for Game 2 of the ALCS between the Yankees and Oakland.
Said Washington: "That's what you call fate."
