I don't like to do a lot of hiking in summer. It's hot and humid and flying insects continually divebomb your eyes, ears and nose.

I'm too much of a hermit these days, perfectly content to keep to myself as much as possible. It's not that the idea of going anywhere is distasteful, it's just that part where I actually get myself out the door is hard. This area doesn't really get the vivid leaf changes you see in New England. It's more like the trees slooooowly turn through October going from green to greenish yellow, to greenish yellow with the occasional splash of red/orange... and then there's a big windstorm and we end up with naked trees until spring.

I've been walking on these park trails since I was a kid, on school outings as well as family ones. Out of the all the green places in this town, it's not the prettiest but it's probably the one I know the best. Me and exercise do not get along. I like walking in the woods if the ground is relatively flat and dry, the weather is cool and low humidity, and there are no mosquitoes. All of those things do not happen at the same time very often, so I don't go hiking unless I have a particularly masochistic urge or I'm trying to atone for some food-related ( Read more... )

When the rain let up, I did a bit of stomping around the woods this past weekend. The peak of wildflower season has come and gone, and the trees are almost fully leafed out so everything was lush and green.

This was over a month ago, actually. It was one of those rare sunny days in winter, and I'd been cooped up inside for weeks so I dragged myself out into the cold to run errands and get some fresh air. I'd never been to this park before, but it's an old farmstead with a few ponds and buildings still standing.
