A dog's life

(I may not have all the details correct here, but the main thrust of the story should still hold)

It seems that as my father and step-mother were preparing to go out somewhere, they saw a man getting into a truck at the edge of their property. They also saw a dog, outside of the truck. Initially concerned that he might move the truck and injure the dog, it became clear that he was driving off, abandoning the dog.

They went out, they came back - the dog was lying on their front doorstep. They fed the dog. They have a fenced-in place on the property where the former owner had a kennel and dog run; my father is out cleaning that now. My step-mother went out to get some dog food. But it will get too cold there during the winter; perhaps the greenhouse or basement could be fitted with a dog door.

But here's the rub: my father loves dogs, my step-mother is terrified of them. And this one may be a pit-bull. We can't take in a dog; we have two now, two kids, and a small and over-crowded house as it is. But they're not just going to dump the dog on a shelter, as they tend to put down dogs like that. Which means that they may have a dog, like it or not.

Really, we can't take in a dog right now. I know this, but I still feel guilty about it. Feh.
