My US History class has a guy in it who is the most ignorant person I have ever met. He's a texan who goes to a university in upstate New York, in one of the most liberal places I have EVER been. You can see how this can be a receipe for disaster.
Last week, the prof stepped out for a moment so the students started just talking, and we got on the topic of the bible, and how you shouldn't follow it word for word. He asks for a reason, and I tell him if you DO follow the bible word for word, then you should stone your children when they are bad, and how it's moral for you to literally sell your daughter into slavery. How the bible says that eating fish without scales is a sin (so if you eat shrimp, you're going to hell), and that wearing a shirt made of more than one cloth is a sin too. He dismisses me, though I am pretty damn sure that those things are in the bible. He then goes on to say "Oh, so you're saying that we should treat 'coons as equals too?" I didn't understand what he was saying, at first, because I have never heard the word "'coon" used as a racial slur in actual context. It seems that his father taught him that blacks were not equals to whites-- and not only that, but his father had taught him that this was actually IN THE BIBLE. I asked him if he had actually read the bible, and he said he hadn't. Somehow, he was led to believe that the 3/5ths compromise was in the bible, instead of in the Constitution (thanks to those who mocked me for not reading the wiki).
He also informed the class this morning that his father had two shotguns for protection. A "faggot shotgun" and a "nigger shotgun". When I asked him why this was, he said that the "faggot shotgun is for the gays, because they's the only kind of whitey who would wanna break into our house." When asked why there was a separate shotgun for black intruders, he proceeded to tell me that "well, dumbass, that's because you can only kill those nightowls with silver."
That's right, folks. Apparently, black people are werewolves now. This isn't just stupidity, this is a special kind of stupidity.
I mean, it's really hard to forget that these people still exist in the states (and well, everywhere). My town is something like 90% liberal, and the conservatives aren't even that much so, so it's REALLY easy to forget unless you see some dumbass like this. I still have NO IDEA how he got into college.
