The New Star Trek

I ventured out to see the new Star Trek movie tonight.  There was something wrong with the sound system in the theater, which annoyed me all through the film (missing range and volume drops), but it still wasn't enough to sway my opinion.  The new Trek was awesome!

After recently watching the Heroes series (through season 3), I knew Zachary Quinto would be a most excellent Spock.  Simon Pegg was also a good fit, even though he doesn't look remotely like the original Scotty.  Until I saw the film, I wasn't sure about the other key actors.  Wow, I was impressed!  They all did a fabulous job.  Karl Urban had some difficulty holding the southern drawl of Bones, but it still worked.

I also wasn't expecting all the chuckles this film induced.  The dialog was great, the action was great, and the appearance of Leonard Nimoy was fantastic. I want to see it again with better sound next time and a little closer to the screen.

The only issue I had with the film was that the story changes the original backdrop of the Star Trek universe considerably for any films that follow it.  I don't want to go into detail about that.  It isn't that they reinvented the francise, it's that a new history is forged as a result of the main plot.  It's kind of tragic, but I can see it'll add unending potential for deeper characters and drama in future offerings.

This is a must see!
