Grrr, the Animal Nazis strike again.
I'd like to foster kittens, since I'm at home a lot right now and I know that the abandoned/feral cat population is out of control in Japan. The very few rescue organizations tend to focus on dogs.
All the places require you fill out an application online. But the biggest (and most organized, read: bureaucratic) of them has a flawed file as the application, and it won't let you fill in any of the boxes. Fine. Cut and paste to email, fill it out there. Get an email back with the following instructions:
Your information must be submitted on the official form, so can you print out the PDF and fill it in by hand and either fax it or scan it and email it to us?
Right. I don't have a printer that works, a fax or a scanner. Which means a lot of creativity at the local convenience store printing area (which refuses to use USB devices). Could they not take the time to fix the problem that won't let people who are trying to help easily submit their information?
Also:
In order to complete your foster application, we will need to set up an interview with you at our Tokyo office. We’ll need to see photos of your current residence and a copy of your housing agreement stating that animals are allowed to be kept on the property.
Photos? I could bring them photos of any place. How would they know that's where I lived? Either you trust me about what I say about my house, or you don't and you come see it yourself. Photos mean nothing. Not to mention the huge pain of getting a copy of the housing agreement, which I'm pretty sure says nothing about animals at all.
Every time I try to help out or do something at one of these organizations, it feels like I'm being vetted more thoroughly than the animals. I'm sick of the holier-than-thou attitudes that seem to be a pre-qualifier to work there. Another place will 'allow' you to come and walk dogs and such as a volunteer, but only at times they set (Ex. Tues, 12-3 shift) and you have to commit to doing it at least once a month. Hello? Wouldn't ANY help at all be nice? The places all go on about how much they need people and how hard the staff has to work, but trying to get involved is such a humiliating hassle that I'm sure it discourages a lot of people.
