-I volunteered at the Nature Center for the past two days. It was so much fun. The educational guys are full of amazing info. I learn something new and amazing every time. For example, a golden eagle can take down a deer.

-I learned that you shouldn't take a four-year-old to Ichiban so soon after fire safety day.  It took me a bit of talking to ( Read more... )

My parents home school my sis (she left public school before the start of 7th grade) for probably 90% educational reasons. (Edited to note: My parents? About as far from liberal as you can get... I'm just saying, it's not religion that pulled Sister out of school, which seems to be the big reason so many home school).

The child was bored stiff at school. Absolutely bored stiff and starting to get into trouble because of it. The work was too easy. So, Mom pulled her out for a year, and they've run with it since. Sis really enjoys it and the challenges she now gets regularly. She likes the control she has too - she has to get certain things done by a certain time (i.e., by Friday X has to be done, this test will be on Wed, etc), but she's free to schedule her time (with Mom stepping in if there's some failure at prioritizing and such, of course), what courses she wants to do on a certain day, etc. Mom puts a ton of work into the curriculum, so it's a bit of a huge undertaking. Sis expects to start community college when she turns 16.

We're going to home school, at least that's the plan at this point. I'd say we'll be a 90% educational, 10% personal issues home school family. I don't feel that public school around here provides enough stimulation, pushes academics enough, pays enough attention to individual children's needs, pushes kids to be good employees instead of thinkers, creators, artists, etc.

But, yea... so much home school is religious crazy that it's kinda frightening (::glances at neighbors next door::). I hope to be down in Knoxville by the time the as-of-yet-non-existent kidlet is of school age, because the home school programs available down there are light years more awesome than what's up here. I mean, school at the Knoxville Zoo? What kid wouldn't jump at that! Hehe.

My brain is still kinda jelly... and now I need to go whip up Chocolate Pies. Whee.

Edit 2: Oh yea, and my sister-in-law, they home school too. They live on a farm up in Ohio, middle of no where. I don't know them well to know what their home school style is though.
