It is the end of the reign of the Terrible Clarkson, the Governor-General who reinvented the practice of overspending tax-dollars. By the same token, Paul Martin doesn't seem very long for his position (he's more solidly positionned this month before Parliament adjourned for the summer, but still) and he needs votes in Quebec. Lucky for him, we need a new Governor-General.
But let's face it, he's liberal, he's above a sob-story, politically correct, affirmative action stunt that would garner thousands of votes and just possibly prolong his stay in power! Well, that's what he claimed when asked why he chose MichaJean for the highest office in Canada. MichaJean is, after all, a very accomplished journalist - a very accomplished journalist who has absolutely no political experience and who just HAPPENS to be a black, refugee, francophone woman.
Honestly, the only way this could be a bigger play for votes is if MichaJean was deaf, blind, mute and quadreplegic. I don't mind the move, in fact I think it's ingenious, but instead of giving us a speech about the decision and insulting the intelligence of every voter in the country, how about just quietly denying it and concentrating on making sure she doesn't pull a Clarkson and turn the job into her own lisence to print money.
I am of the opinion that the Governor-Generalship of Canada ought be held only by citizens of the country BORN here, or at least citizens who've travelled beyond the borders of their own province. Jean may well be brilliant and well suited for the job, but the woman has no idea how things function outside of Quebec and Ontario. Symbollic though the position may be, the Governor-General still serves as an excellent ambassador and will always be a great boon to Canada during any international function she attends, it is therefore rather important that she represent the nation as a whole...
To be fair, while this is a rather important point and while this article seems plaintive, I have decent confidence that the woman will fulfill her duties well and I've no fear of it causing any serious fallout, I just wish politicians wouldn't assume that their voters are completely retarded.
