The war on terror, it's a world thing now. I've heard the term "World War III" tossed around a few times to describe this rather pointless, ultimately futile conflict. The ideals of liberty for all individuals and the prevention of heinous acts by individuals are mutually exclusive. The only thing that can be accomplished by the war is that terrorists will see the consequences of their actions pan out rather unpleasantly for them and a drastic reduction in the world-wide amount of terror attacks will have been achieved.
Such wonderful, colourful and currently improbable dreams. Terrorism extends far further than the middle east and it isn't just evil brown muslims who're capable of perpetrating it. A good example of this is the IRA, which has been bombing all over the United Kingdom - including London - for decades. Worse attacks than the July 7th suicide bombs have killed more english men and women in the past and were completely ignored by the american administrations of the time. The activities of the IRA, the RIRA, the PIRA and all of their wonderful affiliates CONTINUE to be ignored by the Bush administration to this day.
I guess it doesn't look too good on TV when the dead people in the pictures are white christians. That is, unless brown people killed them, then that's just motivation.
I am as interested as anyone in seeing the end of terror in our civilized world, it's one of the more laudable goals of our generation, but to concentrate our efforts on this one particular group only accomplishes two things: number one is the message that as long as they keep it within their borders, terrorists outside the islamic terror groups can go about their business without too much outside interference or repercussion and number two is a rather frightening increase in very specific religious and ethnic persecution which generations of politicians and just outright good people spent most of the last century trying to abolish.
I could enter into a rather long and hateful rant about the evils of the FLQ and how they could well be a terror problem in Canada within a decade, but I'd rather just end this article with a recommendation. We end the direct, deliberate targetting of Islamic terror and simply focus on the terror aspect. Send in the SEALS or JTF-2 or the Marines to smack the IRA around, beat the Thamil Tigers into submission, make the Columbian Terrorists what are always kidnapping folk become acquainted with Guantanamo Bay. Let Bin Laden think he's off the hook for a while, he'll get greedy and then he'll get killed.
The war on terror can not and should not be fought on single fronts, but instead it should be fought on ALL fronts. While apparently more costly, the idea is not to use hundreds of thousands of troops to crush entire nations but to use single regiments at a time and destroy individual GROUPS.
We will win it in the end, the question is just when, how many of us are left and wether our society will be better for it.
