Saturday I went to my brother's house in Fishers to celebrate the first birthday of Abby and Grace.
The party was wonderful....got there just in time to have Jim offer me the chance to feed the girls their FIRST TASTE OF ICE CREAM!
Can you imagine my excitement, my glee?? After all, Aunt Di doesn't make it over there as often as she should and is virtually a stranger to my brother's four kids.
Of course I leapt to the task, grabbing the spoon, the ice cream on a plate, and kneeling down by Gracie's side of the pair. I held out a tiny spoonful of the most delicious treat on earth, a here-to-fore unknown delight to dear Grace, who first held out a tentative finger to the white stuff, poking it a bit before allowing me to raise it to her pretty little bow mouth.
And that's when it happened: Grace looked at me with those giant, innocent blue eyes filled with the happiness that comes with knowing you're about to be fed. The cake was first and oh my goodness, IT was delicious, this must be more of the same!
She closed her little mouth on the spoon and as I pulled the spoon away the startling cold, no, FREEZE of the ice cream hit her senses and she made the most repugnant, disgusting face I have ever seen on a baby.
Flashes were going off all around me, every aunt, grandparent and cousin in the family was snapping away at this AWFUL face AUNT DI made Gracie make! And those blue eyes turned to me and met mine...oh dear, what have I done?
I hear my brother, the father of these babies say, "Abby now...give Abby a bite."
What could I do? I'd been tricked, as only a parent who remembers the first bite of ice cream could do. I fed the nasty stuff to Abby, who made the same grimaces and shudders.
Then it was time to give Grace another go, although I wasn't kidding myself now.
I'd been had.
But they'll remember me now!
