- Born J. R. Cash (initials for first name) in Kingsland, Arkansas in 1932
- In 1944, brother Jack was cut by table saw, died a week later
- Given name John when he joined the Air Force; wrote "Folsom Prison Blues" while in West Germany
- Played with Luther Perkins (guitar) and Marshall Grant (bass); record deal with Sun Records in 1955
- 1958, moved from Sun Records to Columbia Records
