...so I went out and purchased the new Roots album the other night because I realized it was out and I haven't gone to a brick and mortar store and bought some CDs in a long time. I also picked up the new Portishead album and also the first one, which I actually never had gotten around to getting.
Yes, it's strange - the stuff I play at the Cantab is often in that acid jazz/downtempo/trip-hop vein, but I've never had "Sour Times" in my library.
You can do a whole bunch of trip hop without ever having a copy of a Portishead album, I know - I've done it for many years.
Someone last week commented on how I have "great beats" and that I should make a CD because they would be the first to buy it. He works there, so that was cool - he has to be there, but he really likes my stuff. It's one of those weird things - people comment to me every week about how they love what I play, or ask me where I find this stuff, or ask me for a setlist - and I don't really let it sink in - they like it.
The setlist comment always screws with me. I have no setlist, it just comes out as I go along. I couldn't tell you everything I played, although I usually have some basics and staples (Mocean Worker and Greyboy are two off the top of my head). Once
scottwoods asked me to give him a setlist, and it was truly weird to try and write stuff down as I played it. I think that was just to figure out what the hell I did (I don't even know) before they let me loose on the finals stage in Austin last year, but it was weird to try and fit something that's organic into a list.
What I always called "downtempo" is something that people seem to enjoy listening to - and I think I'll try and concentrate on putting something together to give to friends and people who enjoy what I do. This would be part of my overall goal to get the web page working for something more active (top 10 lists? promotion?) and probably getting back to LFO Radio (online streaming) on a weekly basis. If I can start something weekly (hopefully concentrating on a timeslot that would be during the day and therefore in the evening for people in Europe) I could start promoting myself over there and maybe work toward booking some gigs there that will basically give me a place to stay and people to hang out with while I finally visit Europe like I've always wanted to do. If I pay for plane tickets myself and have people put me up and so on, I can travel, meet fun people and play music while seeing places I've always wanted to go with people who actually live there.
This is me trying to get off my ass and moving forward with my DJ and music stuff. Finally.
