"How It's Made" on the Discovery channel - right now they're showing how they make a Zamboni (aka "ice resurfacer"), and before that it was jelly beans.
Everything from concrete mix to bottles of soda, I've seen all kinds of things on this show, and I always get the same kind of kick I did watching how they make crayons on Sesame Street.
Irritation: Installed the new light fixture in my kitchen (now there's no ceiling fan/light fixture for tall people to bang their head on), but I broke the circular fluorescent bulb trying to clip it into place. Have to go to Home Depot and get a replacement. Putting the ceiling fan out on the sun porch to replace the old-school porch fixture that's there now. There's a higher ceiling out there and no A/C (well, I'll put the window one in, but not like in the house, I mean) so it all works out pretty well.
I'm actually getting things accomplished lately. Making tasks and getting them done. Very nice. I love that feeling.
Oh, I got to see a shuttle launch while I was in Florida visiting and taking care of business. I was lucky enough to be there when one was planned, and it actually went off the first time it was planned. Both are unusual, given the amount (less than ten?) of flights planned between now and 2010 when they mothball this shuttle, well past its planned life span and given all the events that have to happen for a planned flight to go off. They have at least two sites where weather has to cooperate (the launch and the emergency landing site in Europe) and the window for it to happen (this time it was less than fifteen minutes). The most amazing part of it was the sound of it. We were somewhere from 5-10 miles from the actual launch site (we were on the mainland and it's on the island - we drove away from Merritt Island and up to Titusville to watch it) and a significant amount of time after we saw the shuttle lift off, we finally felt the rumble and boom. It was amazing to hear and feel that - in a strange way, it reminded me of some of the best dance music I've ever heard with that lovely basso rumble.
I'm a geek and a dork. I admit it. :) (more pics of the launch on my flickr account)
