It's only been a week, but it feels like an eternity!
I had my operation last Friday the 7th. Everything went well, and I was in and out within a day. There was a follow up consultation the next morning and the doc was happy with it so far. I have another appointment next Friday, to further follow up. Hopefully that will give me more of an indication on how successful the surgery has been.
I currently have a gas bubble in my eye so the vision in my right eye is very weird! It's swimmy and blurred, refracted like I'm looking through a bowl of water. I'm having to type this with my right eye closed otherwise I can see my keyboard reflected across the screen and it's all wobbly and sloshy just like moving water!!
However, on the plus side, there has been no pain at all, and my eye is visibly better looking than it was a week ago, so all good!
At the hospital, they drew an X over my right eye to be sure the surgeon got the correct eye! I was glad they did because there was another lady in that same day having the exact same operation on her left eye, so It could have got very awkward!!!
The following morning before my follow-up, looking far more 'with it' :D
The last week has been possibly the longest week of my life! It's been the 'posturing' period which I was dreading far more than the operation. That basically involved staying in a face down position for as much as possible during my waking time for a week. Anyone who has ever tried sitting up with their head bent down, looking int their lap will know that gets very uncomfortable very quickly, so Satuday morning I accepted that I was gonna have to be horizontal to do this properly. I ended up constructing a 'nest' made up of two chairs and a donut neck cushion so that I could lay face down on the bed with my head over the edge at a slightly lower level so that my back wasn't arched. I ended up doing an hourly cycle of 45/50 minutes laying down and 10/15 minutes, getting up, walking around, making drinks etc.
Even though I had a wonderful audiobook on the go all the time, I was still bored and frustrated at all the stuff I couldn't do! But I stuck with it, and finally that all finished last night!
Mr D snuck into the bedroom yesterday and took these *ahem* gorgeous pictues 'for old times sake'! (Excuse the ancient, saggy pyjamas!!!!!)
Anyhow, it's all done now, and I'm so grateful that I had the opportunty to get it done and also grateful to our fabulous National Health service staff who were kind and efficient and fantastic the whole time.
I won't know for sure how successful the operation has been until the gas bubble disperses which could be up to 12 weeks. I've also been told that it could be up to a year before the eyesight in that eye settles down into it's final level as for part of the operation they pre-emptively fixed a catract which would have developed after the vitrectomy, probably within the next 12 months. So I have a shiny new lens in that eye!
So all good. I'm glad to be back in circulation - missed you all!
