I've been enjoying my current LJ style for a little while now. It's awesomeness to have a guy in a band I enjoy being all friendly with my adorable little frog purse, but I think it's time for a new style on my LJ.
Partially, this is because the black background gets in the way of various geeky RPG related image exchange when planning out bits for

P.S. When I upload the new Reference Pages tonight (including the one with the RPG characters), there's going to be an additional text entry field under the "LiveJournal username/community" field: "name to be displayed (optional)". This will let you enter "spacecowboy48" in one field and "Spiegel" in the other to get this result:

Shiny. I don't usually play with the lj user tags with the customized icons, just because LJ changes the code for it every time the wind shifts, and sometimes that breaks things. Though, I do use the icons in LJ styles, and that's fun.
I know I looked into it before where in the LJ style, it could substitute custom user info icons based upon user name, but I don't remember why I gave up on implementing that in the first place. I'll look into it again for the Shingen and Milliways. *shrugs* We'll see how productive I feel tomorrow when I'm off work again.

The reason that all of my custom tags broke a while back is because I stupidly included the class="ljuser" label in the code, which caused all of my links to self-destruct when LJ did a massive overhaul to improve their security, and targeted anything with that class attached. The custom tags I make now are simply image and anchor tags, without any "class" to identify them as such to LJ. I don't expect to have a major failure again like I had then; that's really the only time my code "broke" in a significant way.
As for the code to automatically substitute icons based on user name... That sounds cool. I don't think I've seen that done yet.

I don't remember if I gave up on the project because it was a paid member only override, or if I was just too lazy to type up all the css needed as well as make all the little icons. I think originally I was just going to have it apply the correct department color bald guy based upon who was posting, but since I do most of my community posting from my main screen name, and I play characters across the different department colors, and on 668, I play civillians also, I think I decided that approach was problematic. I'll have to find the instructions again, and ponder how to fix it. I might just have to make a "goddess of the community" icon, and use it for my user name.
That reminds me, I've got a coworker I'm attempting to drag into the game, and he asked me a silly question on Sunday. "What happens if I have my character just randomly hit the self destruct button?" My answer? I told him I'd metagame him out of existence. "As you approach the self destruct button*, you encounter a flaming red head with a wrinkled forehead and spots ( ... )

As long as I'm updating the RPG icon page, I'm adding one for Therav as well. I took the standard Andorian one I already made, and put it in a Starfleet uniform.

Awesomeness. I should update the user info page for the Shingen with the customized icons. However, that means I'll need to make an icon for Grace too, even though she's standard human stock, nothing too noteworthy about her, other than being the #1 fangirl of the Death Kitten. :D
When I do that, I'll plug your user info icon maker thing, as well as the massive tool. ^_^

Okay, I went and quickly updated the Shingen's user info page with the customized user info icons. I used the standard Andorian one for Therav for now. What department color are you using on his collar? I think with the promotion at the time Dizi joined the crew, he's in command red now, instead of security gold. I fussed with Noelle's icon a little, since her hair's a little darker blond than you had it, and fixed her department color to gold instead of red.
Take a look, and let me know what you think. :) I have all the icons I'm using hosted on my LJ photo hosting account, since I don't use it for actual photo hosting, I use it for all my LJ image usage.
Edited to add: I added a plug for your massive tool and icon creator thingies. I left those user info icons as the ones hosted on your site, that way if you update those, it'll show the newer version. Let me know if you want me to amend anything in that plug.

I just updated all of my stuff (and I'll go back shortly to put up the fixed Noelle). I gave

I am amused that you included Spiegel's middle name on your page. Dude doesn't even like his first name, and the middle name only ever gets mentioned by other people. You don't have Noelle's middle name on there (it's Madalyn, fyi). Also, you could include Therav's full name (Hravitherav th'Shan).
Speaking of the Blue Bastard, his user info icon doesn't want to load on your page. Ever the difficult one, that bastard is, isn't he?

So, I just tossed together an icon for Grace also, added it to the Shingen's profile page, and updated Therav's icon image to the new one you made. Suggestions, feedback, or anything else is welcome. I need to go get ready for work now.

I used Spiegel's full name because that's what's on his profile page. I have no idea why I left out Noelle's; perhaps it wasn't there yet back when I made her icon? (I don't have middle names for any of the Murg characters; I rarely spelled out KY Jellico's full name since it would ruin the "KY Jelly" pun.) If you want me to change the names, for consistency, I think I'd be more likely to drop Spiegel's middle name then to add Noelle's. I think of Therav as Therav rather than "Hravitherav th'Shan" … because I'm lazy (and his icon is loading for me. I'll re-upload it anyway, just to be sure). Oh, and I'll add Grace, too. Be just a couple minutes. Have fun at work.

Leave it to Dizi to be the odd one out in the bunch. Though, if you can figure out how to have her sporting the trill spots visibly while still in uniform, I wouldn't object to have a more "proper" version of her to use for the user info icon thingie. That said, I think that the naked Dizi for the icon is better suited to her personality. Also, I should play with her hair again, the style she's sporting in that icon really really doesn't do anywhere near justice to her actual hair style. I'll see what I can do.
Also, you're more than welcome to add the green dude for 668 to the page, and for the Shingen, I've actually been using the combadge with the rectangle background on it, though it doesn't seem to be working correctly in the community style anymore. I'll have to see what's up with that.
Here's the image I have:

I will dig for the combadge presently. It seems to be the black border that's the whole problem though, because the combadge looks fine on a black background. *shrugs*
"Rebel" Storvik likely has seen Grace around, but is not likely to have been introduced. She's a flygirl, so pretty much she chills around seeming useless until one needs someone to go out and fly around shooting shit. Then she goes out, kicks ass & takes names, and comes back to get drunk and do shocking things with her hair to amuse herself. He'd likely know of her being Travis' niece before she confessed such, maybe even know of her name, but that's the extent of how well he'd know her. She'd probably just know him as that creepy Vulcan who skulks around the bars in the station paying a little too much attention to what's going on, likely assume he'd be a good source for information if she can work her way into his good graces.
