distressing jackets

i've read some recipes about distressing tshirts, but i was curious if anyone knew something specific for jackets? i have this brown jacket i'd like to make look more worn, but i'm afraid if i follow the tshirt instructions, i'll end up ruining the lining or something.

if it helps, the tag says the outside is cotton and the lining is polyester.
