Kafka's Metamorphosis is so depressing. Gregor hid under the couch and drew a blanket over himself, to spare his mother the sight of him. It hit home, the self-loathing...all Gregor wanted was to help his family, but they shunned him, and even to his death he thought of how he loved his sister, and wanted to send her to a conservatory to study violin. But no one noticed him wasting away, and there was only a brief moment of sorrow when he died.
