[ Character's Age ] : Unknown I guess late 20s/early 30s
[ Series ] : FFII/Dissidia
[ Canon Point ] : Before defeat in Shade Impulse in Dissidia

[ History ] :
Rise [FF] & Fall [D] of an Emperor

[ Personality ] :
If one were to sum up the Emperor in a single word, that word would be monster. Unfortunately as accurate as the word might be in describing the man, the man is worse than any run of the mill monster. His arrogance is rather obvious, he considers himself greater than anyone else whom might be around him in his own world and even outside of it, he shows little to no respect for what might be greater than him or possibly his equal (point in fact the only two he even seems to show any respect to are Ultimecia & Shantotto in Dissidia) In his eyes, the world is his to dominate and use as he sees fit.

And he is intelligent and manipulative enough to get the results he desires by cunning and treachery if he can't outright just take it for himself. Be it by poisoning the drinking water of his enemies (or their only line of attack, their wyverns and then sweeping the castle) or tricking his enemies into walking into lethal traps willingly if all unknowing of the fact they are walking into a trap. (the coliseum.) Or for that matter arranging it so his enemies unwittingly bring danger into a place they thought safe from it. (Firion rescuing the magically-disguised Lamia Queen in place of Hilda and bringing her right into the rebels hideout.) Even outside of his own world and familiar territory he's still just as manipulatively cunning as he was back home, managing to get the hero's themselves to aid him in his plans without them even realizing just what they were doing until far too late in the game.

He's hard to read emotionally as he tends to affect a calm (if perhaps at times bored) expression and rarely if ever loses control over his emotions. Worry and fear are foreign concepts to him as he can't seem to comprehend that his plans would ever fail him. He's also misanthropic, likely due the fact that the Emperors and their heirs were cursed due to a demon trapped inside an indestructible "Stone of Iludia", it desired to rule the world via proxy and thus corrupted the Emperors of Palamecia into malicious masterminds as a form of revenge for being trapped within the stone as well as using them as proxy rulers.(Unfortunately for the demon, Mateus exiled his own mother after ascending the throne and she along with Minwu ended working to counteract the demon's work and succeeding, though not in time to save her son.)

This hatred of humanity was made especially obvious after the Emperor died and came back in both of his Hellish and Heavenly forms. The first desiring nothing more than the death and destruction of things, while the latter seems to believe (and in a way says as much) that humanity is it's own worse enemy and would continue to suffer and war with each other as long as they existed.

Mateus can be polite when speaking to his enemies, even calling them by their proper name and referring to them as gentlemen. However, he's also just as liable to be insulting and call them insects, worms and other such names upon whim.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths:

- Intelligence; the man is cunning and manipulative, if he can't achieve a goal via brute force, he's entirely capable of using deceit and trickery to get his way.

-Extremely powerful magic abilities; he's a very capable mage, strong enough to conquer his world's Satan and claim Hell and Heaven for his own after his first demise. Also he has been shown capable of summoning "hell-spawn" and commanding monsters in his original game canon.

List of spells;
-Barrier VIII
-Blink VIII,
-Haste VIII
-Slow IX,
-Thunder X

He also holds the ability to produce magnetic energy mines, can create crests of magic energy that fire projectiles or ensnare enemies and holds some ability with psychokinesis.
See this list for names and explanations

Weaknesses

- Arrogance; he thinks he deserves to be at the top of the power chain and rule over everything he surveys and anything who resists this obviously needs crushed or beaten down until it accedes to his demands.

- Misanthropic; he habors a considerable hatred toward humanity in general

- Lack of actual physical fighting ability in normal human form, he instead relies on magic and monsters to do his dirty work for him.

Strength & Weaknesses:

- Dominion over Heaven and Hell; basically after the man died once in his game canon he fights the previous rulers for the domination of both hell and heaven. Thus gains two forms as a result of this; Emperor of Hell and Emperor of Heaven (also known as The Light Emperor).

"You have braved the bowels of Hell to reach me.
But the hand of man, which deals in false justice and forsaken love,
can never hope to defeat the lord master of Hell!"
As Emperor of Hell, he gains in muscle and strength as well as access to status effecting spells and every physical attack that he deals out on his target will heal him for the amount of damage that he inflicts. However while in this form, he has limited access to the rest of his magic and is only capable of using Flare XVI, Starfall X, Blind XVI, Curse XVI, Dispel XVI, Slow XVI.

"If you will not have eternal life,
I will give you eternal suffering!"
As Emperor of Heaven/The Light Emperor, he gains in strength and is capable of healing himself with powerful physical attacks akin to the Hellish form. However he loses the ability to inflict status effects along with limited access to the spells he has normally in human form, instead he gains the ability to cast Holy XVI, Starfall XVI, Flare XVI, and Dispel XVI.

Have you grown tired yet of the endless battles you keep finding? You claim to want nothing but peace but yet you keep on fighting, that sounds rather contradictory to me. Though knowing you for as long as I have now, I can perhaps predict your reply to this. You will swear to remove me from this world like you have the last two places we fought in. So blind to the fact you can not truly defeat me. But if you must come to me, not as a servant as is proper, but to fight... then come and test your mettle against me once more.

Just what is the meaning of Death, when those who die do not remain dead?
