While it's possible the need for a Love-Interest came before Kairi thus making it all the more horrible for her potential, that is the sad truth, yes :( they were more busy concepting her around the only girl Sora should seem interested of (and then came CoM) rather than a Priness of Heart that could actually do something.
Namine, as I stated above, has enough concepts in her arsenal aside from Sora to sustain herself as a character.
Well, that is indeed an interesting question seeing how a Main Disney Girl would have to end up like Kairi. I guess what I wish for is for Namine to be acknowledged as a more of a Square Main Princess. What enrages me though is the so few official arts in which we get to see Namine while there's a flurry of pictures that has Kairi and even an action figure (in her school outfit. Not even Riku as an action figure and they couldn't even put it with her Keyblade). A lot of people complain about KH2's cover because it has Kairi so close to Sora. That makes it seem like she'll matter in the game.
I actually didn't like Garnet, but in the sense I didn't care for her. Something along the basic lines for Kairi in KH1 but then came CoM and made me think about it, and then KH2 made me laugh at it

I always did like shipping her with Olette. They seemed to have hit it on when Kairi was in TLTW XD
Now see? See? Olette. Love/hate Kairi, love/hate Namine, I've yet to come across a person who disliked Olette. She's there, she's a part of the gang, it's possible to ship her with just about any one of the TLTW gang boys - but that's because she's equally on friendship terms with all of them and doesn't seem hung up on Roxas to make people get annoyed. Come to think about it, she has equal interaction with all of them - She is seen going shopping with Pence; She goes looking for the Seven Wonders with Hayner; She worries about Roxas all the time. Olette is a good character. I like her <3
It actually makes sense that Kairi doesn't like guys if you say she sees Sora more of a Puppy than a boyfriend. The Promise to return the Amulet always seemed like her putting a leash on him to make sure he won't run off too far; she's always disciplaning him; she's never as warm and kind as she should've been to be in a romantic relationship with him. It adds up XD I think I love you.
I can't really relate since first - no one knew Kairi was a PoH until the first game. And then, it's not really a "title". She has no Kingdom to be the Princess of - it's just how they called the girls like her whose Hearts can't house Darkness. I can't think self conscious was why she did it.
And yes. SoKai wouldn't amount to too much happiness for either of them. Their Roles would get in the way soon enough and Sora would feel chained. This isn't even like with Namine - here he doesn't have a lovely tale of friendship to follow, only what the Powers that Be dictated. I think Kairi'd fall to the Darkness just to annoy them XD
