[this would be the face of a rather...skeptical young woman staring into the book. in fact she has a small frown on her face as she flips through some of the previous pages]

What kind of book is this? I thought it would help yield some answers but instead-

[have some new feather commentary.]Why is it making these strange ( Read more... )

[Alexei was routinely skimming through the journal when he stops before going to a blank page]

... [He quickly turns it back and that's when he saw who was talking. There was a long pause as he quietly listen to her message. He just couldn't believe that she was here. Even if a guide tells you the dead can come here, it's still damn shocking when you suddenly see someone that been dead for years]

[He quickly filters the journal away from prying eyes before calling out to her.]

Casey...? You're--...Can you hear me, Captain?

The journal you found is used as a communication device here, as I'm demonstrating to you right now.

[technically voice, because she's not actually looking at the book. instead she'll be looking up sharply and glancing around, warily]

...Commandant Alexei? [but how? was he here, too?]

[...Heh. Talk about a wave of memories just from hearing her address him.]

Yes, this is he. Look to the book. I'm speaking to you through the book as I do not know where you are exactly right now.

[That voice... the moment he heard it grabbed a hold of the journal, flicking through the pages to find it. He was certain he was hearing things, certain that he was going crazy from being stuck indoors with nothing to do but sleep and drink. He wanted to be wrong, but he wasn't. There she was, after ten long years since he'd last been able to see her, she was now here in Luceti.

He felt sick, the sharp pain in his chest hurting. His thoughts were a scattered mess, what could he possibly say to her? What would she think? He knew Luceti could bring back people who had died, but from ten years ago? It was too surreal. Despite his fears, he realized that if he didn't say something now he might miss the chance. For the time being, he'd just talk to her like anyone else would, leaving the familiar face behind. If he could even find the words to say that is.]

... If it was a joke, it'd be the cruelest one I've heard. [He pauses.]

Are you in the village?

[notes that those were a strange choice of words, but she doesn't comment.]

I'm assuming this is a village, so yes.

[She's talking back, he can't grasp his head around it.]

Has someone explained to you where you are yet?

I've had a few people offer, but I'm still not sure I can quite believe it yet.

A new world, Malnosso, a book as a communication device-and not even a way out?

I'm still not ready to accept it, but I may have no choice.

[The face in the video is smiling, but sympathetic.]

You must have just arrived. I can try to help explain, if you'd like.

[and this is a somewhat startled Casey because she was not expecting the voice coming from the book. ...nor the face looking back at her. she's cautious, and feeling a little silly for talking to a book, but if this strange book was finally willing to provide answers then...]

All right. First of all, can you explain how we are...communicating?

[A nod, and Ami purses her lips as she makes a serious face.]

These books serve as functional communicators. Others can see the pictures or video, and if you write in its pages, they will appear in everyone else's journals as well. It seems to be a mixture of technology and, well, magic. It sounds unbelievable, but we've seen that it's true.

[she's slowly nodding, though it's still a little hard for her to believe]

That explains the strange entries then. [she's a little satisfied with that, for now anyway.] Can you tell me where I am? And how I got these strange wings on my back?

...I see. Thank you for the help, miss.

You have more time than you're aware of. You're a prisoner here, just like the rest.

And it isn't a joke. The book is a means of communication between the residents.

Can you elaborate on what you said?

[voice] screwthegods January 22 2011, 01:16:59 UTC
I'll assume you mean the former?

A prisoner, brought here for the uses and purposes of a group called the Malnosso, though what their ultimate goal is I don't know. You cannot leave, and if you are called upon to serve in their army, you have no choice but to comply. There are also experiments which will be performed, which can have any number of effects on you and any you might know who are also here.

It's not unlike being a plaything, really.

[her frown deepens with each new piece of information.]

Experiments performed on people? You must be joking-human lives aren't meant to be used as just-[borrowing his word...sort of.]-mere toys!

If this is true, then perhaps it's a good thing I arrived after all. I assume there are groups trying to fight against them?
