A letter... written to a prof, to explain a most unfortunate spell of bad luck:
Hello Prof. McGauley!
I apologize for missing the last few classes. As you know I have been having some problems with my health lately; Norwalk over Christmas, and now strep throat. I have been fighting strep throat for a few weeks now, and my struggle inspired me to come home early in hopes for a speedier recovery away from residence (and I had a lifeguarding recert on Valentine's day). I left tuesday afternoon on the Greyhound, and by the time I got home I felt like I had been hit by the bus as opposed to driven home by it. Wednesday was brutal and by 7pm I could barely swallow, breathe, and I could not speak without experiencing considerable amounts of pain. I ended up staying overnight at the Queensway Carleton Hospital overnight because my strep throat has turned into an a severely abscessed right tonsil that was causing a blockage in my airway. I have been on IV ever since Wednesday and receiving at home care; today was my salvation day... IV came out, and now I am taking an oral medication.
I wanted you to hear what has been happening to me, and I just wanted to reiderate that I am truly sorry for missing classes as of late. It's funny how things work out in the end though; my lifeguard recert was cancelled due to weather (I would have missed it anyways, I was in no condition to do anything), and I'm recovering from this crazy infection that surely would have landed me in a Sudbury hospital in critical condition. I'm just happy I managed to get home to my family and they were able to help me through all this ordeal.
I have been doing my best on all the work I have to do for the class. I watched Whale Rider, and loved it. It really evoked some deep feelings and emotions towards family and one's role in their community; the way women are/were perceived throughout the film was interesting.
Anyways, I hope you have a great reading week, and I will see you on tuesday's class!!
Sincerely, Nicole
