Well, crud. Looks like I won't be getting any research done tonight.
Kat's eyebrows rose in surprise, and she stared at Yuma, but aside from that, her body language didn't change in the slightest. Leormon turned and growled, but Kat chose to disregard his defensiveness.
"Yuma, Renamon" she said softly and she stepped past her partner. "It's nice to see you, even if something tells me that this isn't a visit under the banner of friendship."
"Ma'am, are you sure that's wise?" Leormon hissed quietly, taking a step after her.
"That's where you're wrong," replied Yuma, as she began to approach Kat. "I am here because of a friendship... the friendship I hope you and I still have..."
Kat smiled then. She believed the statement, even if she didn't particularly believe that anything good would come of the meeting. She had faith in Yuma, in spite of everything that had happened. That seal would manipulate her, of course, but Yuma was still Yuma. And Yuma was her friend. She nodded, and she gestured to her sofa, sparing a glance towards the object in Yuma's hand.
"Well, in that case, would you care to have a seat?" she said warmly. "I'm very glad to see you, I've been very worried about you ever since you disappeared. I don't think I have any cookies prepared, but I know I've got some juice in the fridge if you want it."
Leormon knew that Kat was being sincere, but he wasn't sure what she was planning. Knowing that Yuma was sealed didn't help the distrust that he felt, and after the charade that had been pulled in this very apartment some time before, he wasn't about to let his guard down. He focused his gaze on Renamon, trusting Kat could handle herself against Yuma when it came down to it.
"That would be lovely," Yuma replied, as she sat down... a bit more hedonisticly than normal. And she eyed Katherine with a look that wasn't the sisterly affection she once gazed at the woman with...
Renamon looked emotionless... but in such a way that appeared as though he was bottling up his emotions.
"All right," Kat said, tucking an errant strand of hair behind her ear. "Leormon, would you like some?"
"Some water, please," her partner said without taking his eyes off of Renamon. "I had too many sweets with dinner."
Nodding, Kat stepped into the kitchen. She fetched glasses from the cupboard, along with one of the many rings of protection that she'd discreetly hidden around the apartment. Slipping it onto her finger, she continued to prepare the tray of refreshments for her guests. She kept her eyes on the living room the whole time. She finally returned a minute later with glasses for everyone, a pitcher of juice, and a bowl of water for Leormon.
"How have you been doing?" she asked, setting the tray down and pouring the drinks for everyone.
"Much better," said Yuma, upon taking her drink... all the while her eyes running down Katherine's legs. "I've... made peace with certain things, and... found a companion among Lillithmon's servants."
"A companion?" Kat asked, not the least bit ignorant of Yuma's gaze. "Tell me about him or her?"
She smiled, as warm as ever, and turned to face Yuma completely. "I'll always be here, Yuma. Seal or no, you're my friend. You don't have to worry about that," she said.
It wasn't what Yuma had meant, but Kat was not about to outright deny her so early into the meeting.
"... I will later," replied Yuma, her eyes traveling up to Katherine's chest. "But... this is about you and I, Katherine. I don't... think you realize quite what I mean..."
Kat took a sip of her juice, closing her eyes as she used the few vital seconds she had to prepare herself for any attack that might come. "I know what you meant, but I think you know that I can't accept that invitation," she said as she set down her glass. "It's not my destiny. But that doesn't mean I can't remain your friend."
Leormon simply feigned drinking as all of this was transpiring.
"It means we are on opposing sides," Katherine acknowledged, but then she shook her head. "But that doesn't mean we have to fight."
She chuckled, the sound almost hollow, and she put her hand to her forehead. "We both know I'm not much of a fighter," she said self-derisively. "I don't think I'd have a chance if we DID fight. Even with my spells, I can't last long. You remember what happened with your brother, right?"
She smiled gently and reached out to put her hand on Yuma's shoulder. "When he came after you, I told you to run while I distracted him?" she elaborated. "I just wanted you to be safe. If DATS hadn't shown up so quickly, I'd have been killed for sure."
Katherine's expression morphed into a scowl. "So, you intend to refuse me too? If... if you oppose Lillithmon, and admit to it... I cannot simply ignore that..."
"I oppose Lillithmon in my heart," Kat said gently, heedless of Yuma's anger and the hold on her wrist. "Not you."
She reached up with her other hand to gently brush her fingers over her Yuma's hair. "I don't expect you to believe me," she said. "But I didn't expect you to believe me when we first met either. I expect my actions to prove me, nothing else. Please, Yuma... remember that. I don't want to damage our friendship, you're a good friend Yuma."
An attack was coming if she couldn't reach her. She'd just have to trust her own reflexes, and Leormon's.
"You're just like Sayu," she replied. "Not... not willing to sacrifice for who they care about..."
She clutched her chest. "I have Lillithmon inside me, Katherine. Not just the seal... but her counterpart from another world... To oppose her is to oppose me..."
"That's very true," Kat said sadly, shaking her head. "There are things that I am unwilling to say or do, sacrifices I cannot make. You could even call me selfish because of them."
She shut her eyes tightly and bit her lip as she forced her next words. "But I don't think that's accurate," she whispered. "I know what it's like to be alone because I have to keep people away from me, for their own safety."
She frowned and opened her eyes, moisturing catching the light in the room. "But I don't think that you are Lillithmon. There's Lillithmon, and there's you. The two of you are tightly intertwined, perhaps even sides of a coin if you want to go that far. But if I were to accept that you were Lillithmon, I would have to accept that you and I would be eternally opposed, and I can't do that," she explained quickly. "I can fear Lillithmon while still trusting you completely. You're Yuma Kagura, my friend, who I will fight for even if I cannot win!"
The voice came from the dark haired girl who emerged from the shadows of the nearest room... Renamon fading into sight beside her.
Yuma gripped something in her hand, and shot Katherine a devilish smile.

"Katherine. The Demon Kings aim to conquer this world. This means that we will have to fight one another..."

"Why does everyone I love betray me...?!"
